The Westmoreland Club, 59 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, has achieved 5-Star Platinum Status, ranking number eight among the top 15 city clubs in the country.
 The Platinum Club designation is held by only 3 percent of the nation's approximately 5,000 private clubs. This is a repeat honor for the Westmoreland Club, having first achieved Platinum status in 2009. 
The ranking is based on a survey conducted every three years by Club Leaders Forum, a newsletter resource for both club managers and club governance that covers all aspects of private club leadership. 
<hl2 class="subhead" style="subhead">Exploratory rigs decrease</hl2>
The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. dropped this week by five to 1,859. 
Texas-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. reported Friday that 1,402 rigs were exploring for oil and 454 were searching for gas. Three were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago, Baker Hughes listed 1,991 rigs. 
Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, California lost five rigs and Louisiana dropped three. Colorado declined by two and Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas each lost one. 
Pennsylvania added four rigs, while Alaska and West Virginia each gained one. New Mexico, North Dakota and Wyoming were unchanged. 
<hl2 class="subhead" style="subhead">Mid-size sedans recalled</hl2>
General Motors Co. announced Friday a recall of Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn mid-size sedans to fix a transmission problem that could cause the cars to roll away after the driver has left the vehicle.
The recall affects more than 426,000 model year 2007-2010 Saturn Aura and model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 vehicles, equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission and sold in the U.S.
GM said the problem has caused at least four accidents but no injuries. The company will be contacting the owners to tell them how to get their cars fixed.
The problem could cause the transmission to look like it is in park but could be in another gear. Technicians will install a retainer over the cable end or replace the shift cable as necessary in the recalled vehicles.
