Wilkes University student teachers get assignments at area schools

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Would Michael Reagan ever follow his father&#8217;s footsteps and run for president?</p><p>&#8220;My wife and I talked about it; I&#8217;d rather be held hostage by Muammar Gaddafi,&#8221; Reagan said in a telephone interview, adding campaigns are too hard on a candidate&#8217;s family, and elected officials give up too much time that could be spent with loved ones. &#8220;I&#8217;m selfish in that way.&#8221;</p><p>While he devotes his weekends to his family, Reagan, adopted son of the late President Ronald Reagan, and his first wife, Jane Wyman, doesn&#8217;t mind traveling for speaking engagements, including one at the Allan P. Kirby Lecture in Free Enterprise and Entrepreneuriship, set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at Wilkes University&#8217;s Dorothy Dickson Darte Center.</p><p>His topic will be &#8220;Know Your Audience. &#8221; For examples, he turns to memories of his dad.</p><p>&#8220;When Ronald Reagan gave his &#8216;evil empire&#8217; speech (to an evangelical group in Florida) in 1983, the audience he was really talking to were the Natan Sharanskys (Soviet dissidents) of the world, sitting in a gulag,&#8221; Michael Reagan said. &#8220;When he gave his &#8216;tear down the wall&#8217; speech (in 1987 in Berlin), the people standing in front of him were free. It was the people behind the Brandenburg Gate he was really speaking to.&#8221;</p><p>Speaking of the infamous gate, Reagan said, he met a young man in Germany who was under the impression &#8220;the Americans had built the Berlin Wall to keep Communists out of their sector,&#8221; instead of the other way around.</p><p>Similarly dismaying was a comment from a 28-year-old American who had no idea there was a cemetery full of Americans in Normandy. &#8220;I asked him, &#8216;What do you think D-Day was? The day your report card came out?&#8217;&#8221;</p><p>In an effort to help people learn America&#8217;s role in history, Michael Reagan made arrangements with Alexandra Hildebrandt, co-founder of the Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Germany, to include an exhibit about his father.</p><p>A political consultant and frequent contributor to Fox News, Reagan has been a guest and commentator on CNN and the Today Show. As chair of The Reagan Legacy Foundation, he raises scholarship money for military personnel who serve aboard the USS Ronald Reagan.</p><p>Author of the best-sellers &#8220;The New Reagan Revolution: How Ronald Reagan&#8217;s Principles Can Restore America&#8217;s Greatness,&#8221; &#8220;On the Outside Looking In&#8221; and &#8220;Twice Adopted,&#8221; he recently devoted one of his syndicated newspaper columns to scoring the Republican debate held at the Reagan Library.</p><p>He&#8217;s annoyed at Donald Trump for breaking Ronald Reagan&#8217;s &#8220;11th commandment&#8221; to never speak ill of another Republican, but nevertheless believes it&#8217;s good that Trump attracts attention to the Republian party and perhaps to candidates with more substance.</p><p>&#8220;I just hope those millions of viewers saw what I saw at the Reagan Library &#8212; that Emperor Trump had no clothes on and most of the other real Republican candidates were well dressed,&#8221; he wrote.</p><p>So what was it like growing up as Ronald Reagan&#8217;s son?</p><p>&#8220;My best times with my dad were before he went into politics,&#8221; Michael Reagan said. &#8220;When we went to the ranch, we rode horses, played tag, chopped wood. We&#8217;d go out and shoot ground squirrels. Those were great times together.&#8221;</p><style>
