Our Opinion: Wilkes-Barre mayoral candidates should take a stance on property assessment

<p>SCRANTON &#8212; A man wanted in a March shooting at the Sherman Hills apartment complex was caught in Georgia Wednesday by the U.S. Marshals Service.</p><p>Diondre &#8220;Porky&#8221; Bess, 28, formerly of Athens, Georgia was arrested at a residence in Athens by deputies of the USMS Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force</p><p>U.S. Marshal Martin J. Pane in Scranton said Bess was taken into custody without incident. &#8220;Our top priority is to arrest violent offenders, especially those who use guns against our citizens,&#8221; Pane said Friday.</p><p>Pane said the fugitive task force searched for Bess after the shooting and learned he had fled to a family member&#8217;s home in Athens.</p><p>Bess was one of two men wanted in a March 23 shooting that seriously injured Brandon Eubanks. The other suspect, Keith Brian &#8220;Keefy Blood&#8221; Hayes, 23, was arrested by the USMS in Manhattan, New York in April. Hayes is being held at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $1 million bail.</p><p>A witness told police Bess and Hayes fired multiple rounds, striking Eubanks in a second-floor hallway of the high-rise apartments at 300 Parkview Circle.</p><p>According to police, Hayes came of out an apartment and confronted Eubanks. The two men fought and Hayes pulled out a handgun and shot Eubanks multiple times. Bess also shot Hayes who was struck in the neck and other parts of his body.</p><p>Bess and Hayes face charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assaults, illegal possession of a firearm and recklessly endangering another person. The charges against Hayes were forwarded to Luzerne County court in June.</p><p>Eubanks had also been stabbed by his girlfriend in her Sherman Hills apartment in February. He could not be located for a while after his hospitalization for the gunshot wounds and was caught in April to testify against the woman. At the request of prosecutors, Luzerne County Judge David Lupas designated Eubanks a material witness and allowed him to remain free on $10,000 unsecured bail. The judge directed Eubanks to comply with certain conditions, including maintaining daily contact with police, remaining in Luzerne County and not relocating from his Wilkes-Barre residence without permission.</p><style>
