STATE COLLEGE &#8212; Yeah, there was a little tension built up after this one. And at the end of the afternoon, James Franklin got as publicly animated as he had in his first 21 months as Penn State&#8217;s coach.Had Christian Hackenberg&#8217;s third-quarter heave to Chris Godwin been thrown just a few inches farther, Penn State may have been trying to explain a stunning loss to Army West Point on Saturday.As it was, the Nittany Lions &#8212; installed as 25-point favorites during the week against a 1-3 Black Knights squad missing its starting quarterback &#8212; had to turn back a potential game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter to earn a 20-14 win.But Hackenberg did connect with Godwin, who stretched out to make a difficult 49-yard pass. And tight end Mike Gesicki did break open on the following play for a 33-yard touchdown that proved to be the winning score.Franklin was asked what he wanted to tell his fanbase &#8212; much of it frustrated by an offense that sputtered without injured tailbacks Saquon Barkley and Akeel Lynch &#8212; about struggling against a four-touchdown underdog at home.&#8220;I&#8217;m going to come in here every single week and be positive,&#8221; Franklin said, his voice gradually rising. &#8220;Even if it kills you (reporters) and you want me to be negative. I love our players, I love our school, I love our colors, I love Penn State, love Happy Valley, love the community.&#8220;Do we need to get better? Yes! But you guys can ask me every question in the book, and try to get me to be negative &#8212; I&#8217;m not gonna do it. Not gonna do it. I love our guys, I love our staff, I love our opportunity that we have here.&#8220;We&#8217;ve gotta get better. I know it. You know it. The fans know it.&#8221;Despite a four-game winning streak, the Lions (4-1, 1-0) will resume Big Ten play next week with plenty of questions, particularly with an offense that that found few big plays against an undersized Army roster.Without Barkley and Lynch, the Lions rotated three redshirt freshmen with limited success. Nick Scott gained 54 yards and scored his first career touchdown. Johnathan Thomas had 28 and Mark Allen finished with 17.The Lions&#8217; longest run actually came from Hackenberg, who improvised a 19-yard scramble up the middle after bobbling a shotgun snap and was flushed from the pocket.Hackenberg finished with 156 yards on 10 of 19 passing. More than half of those yards came on the back-to-back throws to Godwin and Gesicki on what proved to be the winning drive.&#8220;It may not have been pretty at times,&#8221; Hackenberg said. &#8220;But we got it done. That&#8217;s all that matters.&#8221;Heavy rains that blanketed Centre County throughout the week began to subside as kickoff approached. But the drenched field played a factor in the game as Penn State was unable to test the Black Knights (1-4) deep in the first half.Army, meanwhile, had trouble holding onto a slick ball, fumbling a whopping seven times while running its triple option offense, losing three of them to set up 10 of Penn State&#8217;s points.The Lions defense surrendered a 32-yard throw &#8212; on Army&#8217;s only official pass attempt of the game &#8212; and a 56-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback A.J. Schurr. That was enough to keep it close right up until the final minutes when Jason Cabinda&#8217;s fourth-and-5 sack at midfield ended the upset bid.Despite being one-dimensional by design, Army outgained Penn State 293-264.Asked about his faith in offensive coordinator John Donovan to get things turned around, Franklin curtly responded, &#8220;We&#8217;ve got a long ways to go. I&#8217;m not happy with where we&#8217;re at.&#8221;After a listless 27-10 loss in the opener to Temple, Franklin, a former offensive coordinator himself, said he would become more involved in the play-calling.Franklin said Saturday that has indeed been the case but did not elaborate.Junior guard Brian Gaia offered that Franklin has stopped in on the offensive line meetings &#8220;at least once a week now.&#8221;&#8220;He brings another mind, another thought process to it,&#8221; Hackenberg said. &#8220;And when we&#8217;re able to work together as a unit, pull ideas from players, coaches, and figure out what&#8217;s best for our football team, adding that element in there is always good.&#8220;The more opinions you can get, with the same intentions of winning the game, that always helps. I think Coach Franklin feels the same way.&#8221;No doubt the emergence of Barkley in the previous three wins helped cover up the Lions&#8217; many warts on offense. And if the true freshman is able to play next week when Indiana comes to town, it might just rekindle the team.But it will take something strong to improve the mood in Happy Valley.&#8220;We won today!&#8221; an exasperated Franklin said at the end of his post-game soliloquy. &#8220;We&#8217;re 1-0. We&#8217;re 1-0. And we&#8217;re going to do everything in our power to be 1-0 next week. And I&#8217;m gonna come in here, and I&#8217;m gonna be positive. I&#8217;m gonna be positive. And I&#8217;m not going to go down that road (of negativity) with anybody.&#8220;Love our players. Love our coaches. Love our media. Love everybody.&#8221;<style>
