Ryan Zapoticky and Kieran Sutton had a big weekend competing for their respective teams for Shippensburg University.Zapoticky, a Dallas graduate, led the Red Raiders football team to a 69-67 five overtime victory at East Stroudsburg last Saturday while Sutton, a Lake-Lehman grad, had one of the biggest cross country races of his career to finish second in the Brown Division of Lehigh&#8217;s annual Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem last Friday.Shippensburg trailed East Stroudsburg 27-0 midway through the second quarter but rallied to tie the game at 41-all at the end of regulation. The teams traded touchdowns the first three overtimes and neither scored in the fourth, but the Red Raiders scored and Zapoticky passed for a 2-point conversion. The Warriors had scored but missed on their 2-point try. It was the longest game in Shippensburg history and the second-largest scoring total in PSAC history.&#8220;This was the most fun, best game I&#8217;ve ever played in my life,&#8221; Zapoticky told reporters after it was over. &#8220;It&#8217;s unreal and words can&#8217;t describe it.&#8221;The 6-foot, 200-pound sophomore was 28 of 50 passing for 320 yards and six touchdowns. He also had 11 carries for 103 yards. The 423 total yards are the most by any Shippensburg player in which they had over 100 yards passing and 100 yards rushing.&#8220;Zap was a warrior (Saturday),&#8221; coach Mark Maciejewski said. &#8220;He got hurt earlier and just kept coming back and making plays.&#8221;Sutton&#8217;s Friday performance was not as exciting, but it was just impressive. Running in a field of 354, including athletes from 17 Division I schools, Sutton navigated a somewhat sloppy course that had been traversed by multiple races early in the day. Still, his 8k time of 25:01 was an 18-second personal record.&#8220;Kieran appeared to be very much in control throughout the race,&#8221; coach Steve Spence said in a press release. &#8220;The long runs and strength type of intervals have allowed him to reach new levels of aerobic strength.&#8221;Sutton fell short of victory in the final strides.&#8220;Because Kieran has not yet done much anaerobic work, I was not surprised that he was out-kicked down the stretch,&#8221; Spence said. &#8220;We will soon enter a sharpening phase which will definitely help his finish. I feel that he is in a very good position to have a rewarding conclusion to his fall season.&#8221;Oremus impressive againSt. Joseph&#8217;s freshman Lindsey Oremus finished 11th in a field of 387 in the Paul Short women&#8217;s Brown Division race last Friday. The Dallas grad&#8217;s 6k time of 21.50 was 1:34.5 better than she had at the Iona Meet of Championships in her previous start.Oremus had the top performance by any Mid-Atlantic Regional or Atlantic-10 racer and it was the second-best finish by a freshman. She was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week for her effort.Hawks coach Melody O&#8217;Reilly was impressed with both of her recent efforts.&#8220;At Iona, she had been fighting a cold all week and ran tough under the circumstances,&#8221; the coach said. &#8220;At Lehigh, she ran another gutsy race. She wasn&#8217;t intimidated by the competition in any way.&#8221;Oremus and her teammates have not been running under the best of conditions the past two meets.&#8220;The weather wasn&#8217;t ideal for fast times, but despite the cold rainy, windy, muddy conditions, Lindsey continues to improve,&#8221; O&#8217;Reilly said. &#8220;She&#8217;s a true competitor.&#8221;Duo solid for IowaJunior Chandler Ackers and sophomore Mallory Lefkowitz are having strong seasons with the Iowa field hockey team, which is 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten Conference.Ackers, a Crestwood grad, who was listed as a Big Ten Player to Watch at the start of the season, has five goals and five assists for 15 points and also has a defensive save.&#8220;Chandler has grown immensely over the last year,&#8221; coach Lisa Cellucci said. &#8220;She is a leader in our backfield and on all of our set pieces. She had an outstanding summer of training with the USA Field Hockey High Performance System and was able to get some great experience, which has taken her game to another level.&#8221;Lefkowitz, from Kingston (Wyoming Seminary), has three goals and four assists for 10 points and a game-winner.&#8220;Mallory has taken on a much bigger role this year,&#8221; Cellucci said. &#8220;She has been asked to play in a few different positions depending on our opponent or our team needs. She helps our transition game so much with her speed and elimination skills. Mallory is such a dynamic athlete and she really adds so much to our forward and midfield lines.&#8221;Sadvary coming on Lafayette freshman and Coughlin graduate, David Sadvary, finished 183rd out of 354 runners in the Brown Division men&#8217;s race at the Paul Short last weekend. His 8k time was 26:43 which was much better than his time over the same distance when he posted a 27:47.17 effort as the Leopards dropped their annual rivalry race with Lehigh. Sadvary kicked off the season finishing 12th of 61 runners at the Monmouth Kickoff race in Lincroft, N.J. with a 6k time of 19:45.98.&#8220;David is having a tremendous freshman season,&#8221; assistant coach Jennifer Buirkle said. &#8220;He is doing a great job adjusting to the faster paces and distance runs and workouts at the collegiate level.&#8221;The coach expects her freshman to continue to improve.&#8220;David is a great addition and he brings leadership and optimism,&#8221; the Buirkle said. &#8220;I expect him to continue to making an impact on our team.&#8221;Granger&#8217;s a veteran Junior Emily Granger of Kingston (Wyoming Seminary) entered this season having played in 38 games with 20 starts her first two seasons with the William Smith field hockey team. This season, she&#8217;s started all 10 games on defense for the Herons out of Geneva, N.Y. and helped the team posted a 9-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the Liberty League after suffering its first setback of the season last Saturday, 3-1 to Vassar.&#8220;As one of nine returning starters from last year&#8217;s team, Emily contributes experience and leadership to our backfield,&#8221; coach Sally Scatton said. &#8220;She brings a strong work ethic to each and every practice which has resulted in her becoming a talented and tenacious defender as well as a role model for her teammates.&#8221;The team has given up 17 goals with a shutout in 10 games.Jones can scoreThe Notre Dame of Maryland field hockey team has scored just seven goals in six games thus far this season and senior Kelsey Jones has tallied three of them.The Crestwood grad had two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist in the Gators 5-4 victory over Sweet Brier for their only victory to date. She also had a goal in a 5-2 loss to Bethany.&#8220;Kelsey has been a tremendous asset to the team,&#8221; first-year coach Kara Zimmerman said. &#8220;She was one of the first players to reach out to me and offered to help me settle into my new position. She is a leader on and off the field and, because of that, was named our team captain.&#8221;Jones is the only senior on a squad of 14 which includes 11 freshmen.&#8220;Kelsey&#8217;s patience and ability to help guide these young players has helped the team progress,&#8221; Zimmerman said.Hilliard seeing actionSophomore Kaylee Hilliard has played in 12 games and started the last 11 for the American University women&#8217;s soccer team, the Eagles 4-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in Patriot League play. The Lake-Lehman grad had an assist on the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Mount St. Mary&#8217;s.&#8220;Kaylee has improved her overall play a lot in the past year,&#8221; coach Anabel Hering said. &#8220;She has brought a consistency to her game which has made her a reliable player and teammate. Everyone knows that she will always provide a maximum effort in training and games and she&#8217;s also begun to have a voice on the team.&#8221;<style>
