Letter to the Editor: ‘Religious beliefs’ shouldn’t be grounds for deferral from military service

Where is U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey on the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine black lung scandal?It&#8217;s bad enough the doctor alleged to have taken bribes from the coal industry is simply allowed to &#8220;retire.&#8221; Apparently, holding seemingly corrupt physicians accountable is something only Sen. Bob Casey cares about. Toomey cares about police officers; what about coal miners?All too often conservatives claim those who support public health standards such as the Environmental Protection Agency&#8217;s Clean Power Plan are hurting coal country, but when it is time to actually stick up for working people, they are nowhere to be found. Toomey and his cohort Rep. Pat Meehan spend their days waving the bloody shirt in Congress, but won&#8217;t support the public health of Pennsylvanians.Residents in the Lehigh Valley have rallied in opposition to Northampton Generating Co.&#8217;s proposal to increase dangerous lead pollution, but they have been left hanging by those tasked with representing them.
