<p>It doesn&#8217;t get much trickier than this for a defense.</p><p>After spending plenty of time preparing for Army&#8217;s triple-option offense last month, Penn State must now shift gears entirely to get ready for Indiana&#8217;s spread on Saturday.</p><p>Whereas Army threw exactly one pass a week ago and looked to reduce the number of the possessions in the game, the Hoosiers will throw it plenty and run as many plays as possible.</p><p>Despite missing their starting quarterback and starting running back in the second half against No. 1 Ohio State, the Hoosiers still managed to run 91 plays against the defending national champs.</p><p>Penn State managed to sub pretty liberally on defense last week to start to prepare for a game like this, but it almost cost them against the Black Knights, who scored both touchdowns against a helping of second-teamers.</p><p>It figures to be a different kind of game than last year&#8217;s brutal matchup in Bloomington in which the only two touchdowns came from Indiana reading a screen pass, jumping it for a pick six, and Bill Belton breaking off the longest touchdown run in school history.</p><p>Some lingering injuries may slow things down a bit, but this one should be a bit more entertaining than that 2014 punt-fest.</p><p>A quick reminder that your channel guide on digital cable or satellite may not be updated &#8212; the game will be airing on ESPN, not ESPN2 as originally scheduled.</p><p>LSU-South Carolina was originally supposed to be in the noon ESPN slot, but heavy flooding moved the game to Baton Rouge, where it will now kick off at 3:30 instead. The Penn State game got bumped up in the pecking order, as it were. The impressive senior has been bothered by an ankle issue for the last two weeks and the fact that he couldn&#8217;t get back in last week with a chance to upset the No. 1 team in the country is telling. Backup Zander Diamont, if called upon, could also give Penn State problems because of his running ability. Neither Indiana&#8217;s Jordan Howard nor Penn State&#8217;s Saquon Barkley looks to be 100 percent for the game but odds are that both will suit up and give it a go. Howard has had a terrific start to the season after transferring in from the disbanded UAB program, ranking sixth in the country at 709 yards despite missing some time. Unlike the Lions&#8217; Akeel Lynch, the Hoosiers No. 2 rusher is healthy and Devine Redding has proven effective when called upon. But Indiana&#8217;s scheme is making better use of its new starting wideouts, junior Ricky Jones and sophomore Simmie Cobbs. Even still, the Lions should get some opportunities downfield against a pass defense that ranks among the worst in the country. Chris Godwin showed off his chops with a terrific catch against Army that set up the winning touchdown. The number is a bit misleading, though, as Indiana&#8217;s scheme is designed to get rid of the ball quickly and the no-huddle offense also wears down pass-rushers very quickly. But there&#8217;s no doubt that Indiana has made strides here. Penn State got some good news when Andrew Nelson returned to practice this week, but he may not be ready to go just yet. Tackles Austin Johnson and Anthony Zettel were the anchors of the unit that held Hoosiers star Tevin Coleman in check last year, and they&#8217;ll be counted on again to to help against Jordan Howard. Look for Indiana to try and get senior Nick Mangieri matched up against Paris Palmer to try and disrupt the Lions. But it was also a long, tough game for all of the Lions&#8217; young linebackers with Brandon Bell out with an injury. Freshman Manny Bowen saw a big increase in reps and Ben Kline returned to the field after missing the past 23 months. Bell is questionable for this week and would be a big loss if he can&#8217;t go. Fellow safety Jordan Lucas came back a week ago but didn&#8217;t look like his usual self, particularly when he couldn&#8217;t bring down Army quarterback A.J. Schurr in the open field on what turned into a 56-yard touchdown run. The Hoosiers&#8217; secondary has struggled in as they break in two sophomores and two true freshmen as starters. It only makes sense that the specialists would be affected as well. Punter Chris Gulla looked dazed after making a tackle on a punt last week and never returned, with Daniel Pasquariello stepping in to punt and Robby Liebel taking over as the holder. No matter who ends up handling punting duties, the coverage team will have to be on edge as Mitchell Paige already has a 91-yard punt return touchdown on his resume. Penn State has kept things pretty conservative since Temple, but the coaches may not have a choice but to open things up to try and keep up with Indiana. The Hoosiers are really going to test Penn State&#8217;s young linebackers with quick passes, hoping to neutralize the excellent D-line.
