<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Most singers and musicians only come to town when they have new product to hawk, but that wasn&#8217;t the case Friday night at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts.</p><p>Lyle Lovett, who hasn&#8217;t released an album since 2012&#8217;s &#8220;Release Me,&#8221; and John Hiatt, whose latest is from 2014, came to Wilkes-Barre to do what they do best &#8211; entertain an audience with two hours&#8217; full of great songs, amusing stories and some fine acoustic-guitar picking.</p><p>&#8220;Thank you very much,&#8221; Lovett said as he took his place at center stage. &#8220;Thank you for bringing us back to Wilkes-Barre.&#8221;</p><p>As the two singer-songwriters made small talk while they tuned their guitars, it was hard to hear Hiatt&#8217;s responses to Lovett&#8217;s questions.</p><p>&#8220;Talk into the microphone!&#8221; a woman from the crowd shouted.</p><p>&#8220;Thanks, that&#8217;s good advice,&#8221; Hiatt said, making sure his response was audible throughout the theater.</p><p>Accompanying himself on a 1947 Gibson acoustic, harmonica and with some world-class whistling, Hiatt, now 63, got the ball rolling Friday with a nice rendition of &#8220;Perfectly Good Guitar&#8221; from his 1993 album of the same name.</p><p>Lovett, the 57-year-old, four-time Grammy winner, answered with his version of Chuck Berry&#8217;s &#8220;Brown Eyed Handsome Man,&#8221; from 2012&#8217;s &#8220;Release Me.&#8221; Proving he&#8217;s on top of this season&#8217;s baseball playoff picture, the Texan inserted Houston Astros player Jose Altuve&#8217;s name into the song&#8217;s baseball-related verse.</p><p>Except for the occasional harmony or guitar solo from Hiatt, each man mainly performed solo on Friday, with the other sitting and listening as intently as the audience. The only true duet, on Lovett&#8217;s version of &#8220;White Boy Lost in the Blues,&#8221; came late in the set.</p><p>Hiatt scored next with &#8220;The Open Road,&#8221; the title track of his 2010 album, and continued with &#8220;Face of God&#8221; from his most-recent album, &#8220;Terms of My Surrender.&#8221; Lovett countered with &#8220;Fiona,&#8221; the tale of a one-eyed woman, and &#8220;God Will&#8221; from his 1986 self-titled debut album.</p><p>Other Hiatt highlights included: 2000&#8217;s &#8220;What Do We Do Now,&#8221; 1989&#8217;s &#8220;Drive South,&#8221; 2014&#8217;s &#8220;Marlene,&#8221; and 1995&#8217;s &#8220;Cry Love.&#8221;</p><p>Lovett&#8217;s gems included: 1989&#8217;s &#8220;What Do You Do/The Glory of Love,&#8221; 1992&#8217;s &#8220;She Makes Me Feel Good,&#8221; 1987&#8217;s &#8220;She&#8217;s No Lady,&#8221; and 1989&#8217;s &#8220;Nobody Knows Me&#8221; by request.</p><p>Hiatt then rattled off fine versions of &#8220;Crossing Muddy Waters,&#8221; from 2000&#8217;s album of the same name, and &#8220;Memphis in the Meantime&#8221; from his 1987 breakthrough album &#8220;Bring the Family.&#8221; Hiatt updated the latter by substituting Blake Shelton&#8217;s name in the line, &#8220;But I don&#8217;t think Ronnie Milsap&#8217;s gonna ever record this song,&#8221; much to the audience&#8217;s delight.</p><p>Lovett did a fantastic version of the Grateful Dead&#8217;s &#8220;Friend of the Devil,&#8221; just as he had on the 1991 tribute album &#8220;Deadicated,&#8221; and mentioned that he and Hiatt have been doing shows together off and on since October 1989.</p><p>The main set ended with Hiatt&#8217;s &#8220;Real Fine Love&#8221; (from 1990&#8217;s &#8220;Stolen Moments&#8221;) and one of his best known songs, 1987&#8217;s &#8220;Have a Little Faith in Me.&#8221; Lovett wrapped up his portion with his version of William Moore&#8217;s &#8220;One Way Gal&#8221; and his own &#8220;If I Had a Boat&#8221; from 1987&#8217;s &#8220;Pontiac.&#8221;</p><p>For the encore, Hiatt did 2001&#8217;s &#8220;The Tiki Bar Is Open&#8221; by request and Lovett finished up with &#8220;My Baby Don&#8217;t Tolerate,&#8221; the title song of his 2003 offer.</p><style>
