‘Badges and Boots’ aims to comfort sick children

<p>PRINGLE &#8212; The borough council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting tonight, where council members are expected to discuss the borough&#8217;s agreement with Kingston for police protection.</p><p>Council members and Mayor Dorothy Peters are at odds regarding extending the borough&#8217;s contract with the Kingston Police Department, which has been providing police protection for Pringle for the last five and a half years.</p><p>Councilman Joe Piazza explained that Peters vetoed the agreement at a meeting on Sept. 30.</p><p>Kingston Borough Council voted on Oct. 5 to extend the contract to provide services to Pringle. If the extension is approved by Pringle, the contract will extend through the next four years with annual 2 percent increases in cost.</p><p>Policing costs will rise to $69,315 in 2016, $70,701 in 2017, $72,125 in 2018 and $73,557 in 2019. When Pringle had a part-time police department, Piazza said it carried an annual cost of about $54,000.</p><p>Piazza said the matter is expected to be voted on at the meeting, but is concerned there may not be enough votes to override Peters&#8217; vote. Of the seven-member council, Piazza said four members were for the agreement, two were on the fence and the last was opposed.</p><p>Should the veto prevail, Piazza said Pringle does not have police protection starting on Jan. 1, 2016.</p><p>&#8220;She&#8217;s putting every person in Pringle in harm&#8217;s way,&#8221; Piazza said. &#8220;She&#8217;s putting the town in jeopardy.&#8221;</p><p>Peters could not be reached for comment.</p><p>Piazza claimed that Peters vetoed the agreement to &#8220;shop around&#8221; for other options. According to Peters&#8217; veto, which Piazza said was sent to the clerks office, she claimed that the matter &#8220;had not been discussed enough by the full council and me,&#8221; and that she was not aware of meetings for the borough&#8217;s police committee to express her concerns.</p><p>Piazza, however, disagreed and said that she has had opportunities to be involved.</p><p>Citing the agreement, Piazza said that &#8220;in the event of a dispute between the parties&#8221;, a meeting would be held by the police committee to address them. Piazza said officials also meet with Kingston police Chief Michael Krzywicki on a quarterly or as-needed basis.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had them for five and a half year with no big issues, no big problems,&#8221; Piazza said. He added that Peters has been free to express her concerns to Krzywicki.</p><p>Piazza spoke highly of the agreement and of the Kingston Police Department.</p><p>&#8220;As far as we&#8217;re concerned, Kingston is by far the best police department on the West Side,&#8221; Piazza said. &#8220;We know Kingston &#8230;. and they give us a fair price for the services that they provide to the town.&#8221;</p><p>Piazza urged residents to come to tonight&#8217;s meeting as the decision is weighed by council members.</p><style>
