Bankruptcies, flip-flopping allegations highlight war of words in heated Rice Township supervisors race

The King&#8217;s College football team lost a stud wide receiver when Dan Kempa graduated last spring.Coach Jeff Knarr was looking for a replacement on the recruiting trail, then a perfect fit fell right onto his lap when Matt DeMarco decided to transfer.&#8220;We were losing as much as we were losing but were getting a kid who was inexperienced in a way, but he has play-making ability and the big-play capability that Dan brought,&#8221; Knarr said. &#8220;Anytime that you can get a kid on the field that can peak right away with anybody that we&#8217;re playing with that&#8217;s a comforting thought.&#8221;For three years, Matt DeMarco starred at Meyers High School as a wide receiver and quarterback. He was recruited heavily coming out of high school and spent his redshirt freshman season at FCS Monmouth University as a receiver. When he decided to return home, he found a perfect fit with the Monarchs.&#8220;I was redshirted and didn&#8217;t mind it, but I kinda got caught up in because I was practicing, working hard,&#8221; DeMarco said. &#8220;Honestly, (being at King&#8217;s) works out a lot for me because I came in in spring and got to learn the offense really well. I got to play at a high level at Monmouth so coming here I immediately clicked right in with the offense.&#8221;His stats aren&#8217;t eye-popping by any means as he has just 19 receptions for 138 yards and no scores in four games while missing one game due to his Air Force ROTC commitments. But, he&#8217;s also rushed three times and is a triple threat with the ability to pass, which is a weapon that Knarr can utilize at any time.Using his weapon, Knarr has been looking to get DeMarco involved in the offense more often, and DeMarco knows it&#8217;s just a matter of time before he breaks out with a big game.&#8220;I need to do the little things correct like getting off the ball and running the right routes correctly and learning the defenses coverages and things like that,&#8221; DeMarco said. &#8220;Once I get to learn that more and more I&#8217;ll definitely be more incorporated in the offense.&#8221;Since graduating from Meyers, college football has been an eye-opener for DeMarco, as expected. While at Monmouth, he had to learn how to play receiver once again. But the Division I experience made him better, and he&#8217;s using the skills he picked up there now with the Monarchs.&#8220;Monmouth taught be a lot of things to be a solid wide receiver and I brought a lot of those techniques here,&#8221; he said.DeMarco, who holds the Meyers single-season record for receiving yards with more than 900 and 19 touchdowns during his junior year, still doesn&#8217;t realize how big of an accomplishment that is at a school that is rich in history in its 85th year and has produced legends since the days the legendary Mickey Gorham coached the Mohawks back in the 1960s.&#8220;A lot of good football players came out of there. But honestly, I still don&#8217;t think I understand,&#8221; DeMarco said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a huge honor and I think it&#8217;s a great thing to have, but I don&#8217;t brag about it or anything.&#8221;This weekend, DeMarco and his Monarchs teammates will face MAC rival Lycoming on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium at 1 p.m. Both teams enter with identical records of 1-3 in the MAC and 1-4 overall marks. But they each could easily have three wins, or be winless. Whenever these squads hook up it&#8217;s been a tightly contested, especially over the last two seasons.Even though the Warriors, a perennial winner in the MAC has struggled this season, Knarr knows they&#8217;re still the same smash-mouth team of the past.&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be a typical game. Our kids have to be ready for a physical, hard-fought football game in the trenches,&#8221; Knarr said. &#8220;And the team that can make the most plays and the least mistakes is probably gonna win.&#8221;Something has to giveAfter a bye last week, Misericordia returns to the gridiron on Saturday traveling to Chester to face Widener, which is coming off a 27-7 win over Wilkes last week before its bye.The Pride, who are the defending MAC champions, don&#8217;t have the potent offense they&#8217;ve orchestrated in the past but they&#8217;re still dangerous.Widener enters with the top passing offense in the conference averaging 320.6 yards in the air per game. On the flip side, the Cougars have the third-best passing defense in the MAC only allowing an average of 151.4 passing yards per game.Misericordia&#8217;s last time out was a loss to now-17th-ranked Albright, but the team was within two scores after a touchdown early in the third quarter, before the Lions pulled away for the 41-13 win.The Cougars have been in every game this season or had opportunities that they couldn&#8217;t capitalize on.
