WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; For most of the 25 meetings between King&#8217;s and Lycoming in football, there hasn&#8217;t been much of a rivalry. The Warriors have won nearly two-thirds of the previous 24 games entering Saturday.Now, there&#8217;s a rivalry.For the second time in three years, the Monarchs pulled out a late, dramatic victory over Lycoming with a 30-26 victory on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.&#8220;Our kids understand how good Lycoming has been for a long time and they realize they gotta play four quarters of football and use all 60 minutes,&#8221; King&#8217;s coach Jeff Knarr said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what it takes to beat a quality team like Lyco.&#8221;Saturday&#8217;s win wasn&#8217;t decided as late as the win two years ago when the Monarchs scored a touchdown with 9 seconds left to win by four points, and both teams aren&#8217;t battling for the MAC title like they were at that time, but it was still equally impressive.With the Monarchs (2-4 overall, 2-3 MAC) trailing by two points, they got the ball back with 6:05 remaining in the game needing at least a field goal to take the lead or drive 72 yards for a touchdown.That didn&#8217;t seem like too difficult a task for Monarch quarterback Tom Hehre, who completed six passes for 55 yards on the 14-play drive, which was capped by a 5-yard TD plunge by Gabe Brown putting the Monarchs in front by four points with 52 seconds left.Hehre, who ran for a for six yards on a fourth-and-four play to get to the Lycoming 21, completed passes to four different receivers on the drive, and the Monarchs were helped by a pass interference penalty that moved the ball to the Warriors 6 right after Hehre&#8217;s first-down run. The Monarchs also converted three third-down conversions on the drive, including Brown&#8217;s TD run.&#8220;Honestly, I felt like the offense was clicking all game,&#8221; Hehre said. &#8220;The offensive line was giving me time. I had all day to throw all game long. That definitely boosted confidence. Plus when I feel like I&#8217;m in that zone, nothing&#8217;s gonna stop the offense, nothing&#8217;s gonna stop me.&#8221;Lycoming (1-5, 1-4) had chance for one last effort to reach the end zone getting the ball back with 47 seconds left. After QB Chase Whiteman completed a pass for 19 yards to Nick Costello, who saw daylight ahead, the ball was stripped by the Monarchs Anthony Martuccio and recovered by teammate Tyler Cruz to seal the win.&#8220;When someone couldn&#8217;t secure the tackle then came in and ripped it out, that&#8217;s what we teach,&#8221; Knarr said . &#8220;We try to work on turnovers and we&#8217;re doing a good job of that and they made a play.&#8221;Hehre, who played in the win two years ago versus Lycoming, had a career game on Saturday with 231 yards, two passing touchdowns with no interceptions and a rushing TD. It marks his second straight contest with no interceptions after tossing four in his first two career starts. He missed the team&#8217;s last game with an injury, prior to the bye a week ago.&#8220;Being my first year starting I had to find my groove and ever since the DelVal game I was getting into it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I worked hard all bye week to get back and now I just feel like that zone is coming to me and things are going a lot better. &#8220;Hehre&#8217;s legs gave the Monarchs a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with an 11-yard TD run. Lycoming found the end zone on the drive after that, but missed the extra point and was chasing that point the rest of the game. After taking their first lead in the fourth quarter, the Warriors couldn&#8217;t connect on a two-point pass play.The King&#8217;s defense had trouble containing Lyco tailback Blake Bowman, who scored all four of the team&#8217;s touchdowns, three rushing and one receiving. Bowman ran for a game-high 142 yards and hauled in two receptions for 27 yards.&#8220;We tried to recruit him. You always try to recruit tailbacks who are wrestlers cuz they bring that toughness to the position,&#8221; Knarr said. &#8220;He played awesome. I was concerned about him because he does hit the hole so hard that you could see the running game getting better as the year goes on.&#8221;Widener 40, Misericordia 10One bad quarter doomed Misericordia in the loss as the Pride scored 23 points in the second, while the Cougars couldn&#8217;t capitalize on two Widener miscues in the first quarter.Misericordia&#8217;s Brian Hart intercepted a Widener pass in the end zone on the Pride&#8217;s first drive. The Cougars ran 12 plays on the ensuing drive, but only gained 39 yards and had to punt.At the end of the first quarter with the game still scoreless, Widener missed a field goal giving Misericordia another chance. This time the Cougars went three-and-out to start the second quarter.After that, Widener scored on four straight possessions in the second quarter to take a 23-0 lead into the break.The Cougars got on the board in third quarter when Jeff Puckett connected with Tom Stelzer for a 4-yard TD pass cutting Widener&#8217;s lead to 26-7.
