Moderate temperatures, conditions greet area residents mid-week

<p>HANOVER TWP. &#8212; The Hanover Area Junior/Senior High School opened its doors on Tuesday night to parents, students and members of the community wanting to know more about safety.</p><p>The first annual Hanover Area Safe Schools Night marked America&#8217;s Safe Schools Week, and although addressing a serious matter, provided a bit of mid-week fun.</p><p>Superintendent Andrew Kuhl speaking to more than a 100 attendees young and old, said, &#8220;the issues that we are dealing with concerning school safety are numerous and grow complicated as society changes. We will steal the slogan from our friends here tonight, from the Boy Scouts &#8212; we need to prepared.&#8221;</p><p>Dozens of area organizations filling the school&#8217;s hallway worked to make that preparation a reality, including Catholic Social Services, the American Red Cross and Hanover Township Crime Watch.</p><p>In addition, the Hanover Township Fire Department and Ambulance Association were on hand to provide information about fire and emergency safety.</p><p>With the weather fully cooperating, participants made their way to school&#8217;s parking lot for not only the opportunity to learn, but to get to know the township&#8217;s emergency responders.</p><p>Hanover Township Fire Chief Joe Temerantz said the event provided a welcomed chance for the department&#8217;s members to interact with the community.</p><p>&#8220;Its especially appropriate during our department&#8217;s fire prevention week,&#8221; said Temerantz. &#8220;We&#8217;ll be out all week teaching such simple techniques as stop, drop and roll and exit drills in the home, helping keep our kids safe both inside and outside of school.&#8221;</p><p>Darlene Davis, president of the township&#8217;s crime watch, was on hand dispensing not only specific information on keeping neighborhoods safe, but also candy for those who chose to dress up in anticipation of Halloween.</p><p>Davis provided handouts on such topics as &#8220;suspect identification&#8221; and &#8220;knowing your neighbors,&#8221; which she said were simple, but invaluable in the long term.</p><p>Hanover Township Crime Watch members, she said, are quick to go out into to the community, providing information that makes neighborhoods and its residents safer.</p><p>Brian Black, 911 supervisor, was on hand providing information on such topics as &#8220;Smart911,&#8221; which allows residents to input valuable information about themselves, which is linked to specific telephone numbers and available only in an emergency.</p><p>&#8220;If you want emergency responders to know someone in your house is disabled or that you have a cat or that your son&#8217;s bedroom is on the second floor or that you are a diabetic, this allows you to do so,&#8221; he said.</p><p>Assistant Principal Ann Marie Kochuba-Mantione credited Kuhl with helping staff and faculty within the district&#8217;s four buildings come together &#8220;almost like family.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Mr. Kuhl has taken this opportunity to make a positive impact, building relationships with various agencies and institutions,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s phenomenal.&#8221;</p><p>To eighth-graders Abby Korba and Kaleb Rigol, members of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), the evening provided opportunity to act as role models for younger students and to enjoy time with friends.</p><style>
