Letter to the Editor: News coverage of Klan’s recruitment effort warrants an apology

<p>HARRISBURG &#8212; House Bill 231, introduced by state Rep. Gerald Mullery, D-Newport Township, to update the antlerless deer hunting licensing system, was approved by the House Game and Fisheries Committee, of which he is a member, on Tuesday.</p><p>Currently, the Pennsylvania Game Commission determines the number of doe licenses to be allocated, but county treasurers distribute the permits. To apply for a doe license, hunters must fill out a form, write a check and mail them to any county treasurer&#8217;s office in the state.</p><p>Mullery&#8217;s bill would make the Game Commission responsible to distribute doe licenses.</p><p>&#8220;Hunting and fishing licenses are available online, and Pennsylvanians should be able to obtain an antlerless license the same way,&#8221; Mullery said. &#8220;It&#8217;s time to modernize this antiquated system.&#8221;</p><p>Mullery said the current system led to Luzerne County hunters being shut out of a doe license last year when the treasurer&#8217;s office, citing staff cuts, failed to process applications on time.</p><p>The bill now moves to the full House for consideration.</p><p><strong>Clarification</strong></p><p>Laura Beers, office manager for the Luzerne County Treasurer&#8217;s Office, said Wednesday that Mullery&#8217;s description of the issues surrounding the 2014-2015 doe licensing process in Luzerne County was incorrect. &#8220;Licensing functions were removed from the treasurer&#8217;s office in October of 2013 because of the home-rule charter,&#8221; Beers said. &#8220;The treasurer&#8217;s office was not involved in doe licensing last year.&#8221;</p><style>
