<p>HAZLETON &#8212; Albina Maddon was working her usual shift at Third Base Luncheonette, the same place she&#8217;s worked since her high school days in the late 1940s.</p><p>It was Tuesday and Albina&#8217;s mind was on her son &#8212; her &#8220;Joey&#8221; &#8212; who was in Chicago getting his Cubs ready to play the New York Mets in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series. The Cubs were down 2-0 at the time, having lost the first two games in New York.</p><p>It didn&#8217;t get any better Tuesday night when the Cubs lost again to the Mets and faced elimination Wednesday night. If eliminated, the Cubs&#8217; tradition of finding a way to not make it to the World Series would continue.</p><p>That&#8217;s the easy story-line. Cubs lose, again. Cubs jinxed. The fabled billy goat. Bartman and all that.</p><p>If you&#8217;re a true baseball fan, even if you&#8217;re not a Cubs&#8217; fan, you see the obvious here.</p><p>In one season, Hazleton&#8217;s Joe Maddon has transformed the Cubs into a legitimate championship contending team. His team won 97 games, third best in all of baseball. Only the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates won more and they&#8217;re in the same division as the Cubs.</p><p>While Maddon has changed the mindset of his team, Cubs&#8217; fans have to change their mindset, as well. Stop blaming the past for the failures of the present. Live in the present, as Maddon insists.</p><p>That&#8217;s why even being down three games to none, Maddon&#8217;s Cubs still had a chance to take each game one at-bat at a time.</p><p>Albina told me her Joey gets that from his father, the late Joe Maddon, Sr. &#8220;I know when he sets his mind to something, he does his best,&#8221; Albina said of her son. &#8220;I knew he would do good wherever he managed. He takes after his father; he has patience.&#8221;</p><p>The Cubs haven&#8217;t won a World Series since 1908, so patience of their fans is wearing thin. But the Cubs of 2015 are not wearing thin, and never will be the Cubs of the past &#8212; not as long as Albina&#8217;s Joey is at the helm. In one season, he has produced results that indicate the Cubs are and will be a team to reckon with every year.</p><p>When is the last time the Cubs were thought of in that way?</p><p>Albina said Joey sees good in everybody, another trait inherited from his father.</p><p>When Joey was at Lafayette, he wanted to come home.</p><p>&#8220;He said he wanted to come home and be a plumber like his father,&#8221; Albina said. &#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t let him come home. I told him to stay at Lafayette. I was the meanie.&#8221;</p><p>Just like her Joey sees the good in everybody and the talent in his players, Albina saw the potential in her son. She knew her Joey would be successful.</p><p>Boy, was she right.</p><p>Albina is a proud mother. She beams when she speaks of her Joey. And she&#8217;s most proud that her son has never forgotten where he came from. She&#8217;s proud of his community work, helping to establish a community center in Hazleton.</p><p>Joe Maddon will return to his hometown after the season, probably some time in December. He will enjoy seeing his family and his friends. He will especially enjoy the spaghetti and meatballs made by his sister, Carmine.</p><p>Win or lose in the NLCS, Joe Maddon will know he has done his best. His mother knows that, too.</p><p>Should the Cubs win the World Series, Maddon would be placed in high regard with every Cubs fan in history.</p><p>But Albina can&#8217;t even think about that.</p><p>&#8220;He got them this far,&#8221; she said. &#8220;All we can do is hope for the best.&#8221;</p><p>Albina placed a Cubs&#8217; sticker on her husband&#8217;s tombstone. She knows her husband would be proud of Joey, too.</p><p>Whenever the Cubs take the field against the Mets, Maddon expects his players to give their best.</p><p>Whether it&#8217;s in Chicago, Tampa Bay or Hazleton, Albina has always known her son will give nothing less than his best because that&#8217;s the way he was raised.</p><p>And now, Manager Joe Maddon must continue to instill that mindset to his players, coaches and fans.</p><p>And when it does happen &#8212; as the late Harry Caray would say, &#8220;Cubs win! Cubs win!&#8221; &#8212; no one should be surprised.</p><p>Albina Maddon certainly won&#8217;t be.</p><style>
