Hanover Area riddled in loss to Panther Valley

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Telling the story of GAR&#8217;s 56-13 win over Holy Redeemer without first discussing Anthony Maurent&#8217;s first quarter would be doing the game an injustice.Maurent scored five touchdowns in the first quarter in five separate ways &#8212; rushing, receiving, punt return, interception return and fumble return. For those five touchdowns, he touched the ball exactly six times Friday. The only time the Grenadiers senior didn&#8217;t find the end zone was when he slipped on the Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium turf.&#8220;I did pretty well,&#8221; Maurent said. &#8220;I just got my motor going, just like last week. It feel good, real good. I wanted to get five touchdowns &#8212; that&#8217;s what I accomplished. I just had to keep it going.&#8221;Maurent dominated an injury-depleted Royals team that struggled to move the ball until the Grenadiers second team took over. He didn&#8217;t even to touch the ball very often on offense, running twice for 22 yards and catching two passes for 74 yards.On the sidelines, Maurent&#8217;s teammates were egging him on to get his sixth different style of touchdown on a kick return.&#8220;Yeah, my teammates wanted me to get a kick return,&#8221; Maurent said. &#8220;If I got that, I would have got everything accomplished.&#8221;Asked if he&#8217;d get a chance to pass the ball for the Holy Grail, Maurent said, &#8220;No, I&#8217;m not sure about that.&#8221;Maurent put the Grenadiers on the scoreboard with a 26-yard rushing touchdown at the 10:11 mark of the first quarter. Fourteen seconds later, he recovered a fumble for another touchdown.It wasn&#8217;t entirely the Anthony Maurent Show under the lights on Old River Road. Garry Kroll put the Grenadiers ahead 21-0 on a 22-yard run in the first quarter. After three more Maurent touchdowns put the game out of reach, Dajon Rush and Josh Goodwin found the end zone on runs of 2 and 45 yards, respectively, within a 100-second span.&#8220;We were worried about what was going on here,&#8221; GAR coach Paul Wiedlich Jr. said. &#8220;We could only control what was going on here. Our kids are starting to come together and gel together.&#8221;After Goodwin&#8217;s score made it 56-0, GAR had registered five offensive touchdowns on 10 plays.Holy Redeemer tacked on two touchdowns in the second half. Eric Jeffries and J.D. Turosky punched in a pair of short-yardage runs to break the shutout. Turosky completed five passes for 79 yards.Wiedlich went out of his way to make a point to acknowledge the coaching performance of Holy Redeemer&#8217;s Scott Dennis.&#8220;Coach Dennis really had those kids prepared,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They&#8217;re a little short with numbers and everything. But their team is very well prepared. And I give all kinds of credit to he and his staff.
