The problem of tractor-trailers driving up and down Giants Despair is still with us.Another rig rolled over on Sept. 30, dumping its load in the S-turns. The driver, from Texas, was injured. Rigs continue to drive this road many times a week, even in broad daylight. The Wilkes-Barre Township Police and state police were told many times over the past year and half that tractor-trailers were coming down the mountain and entering the township in the wee hours of the morning. How many were stopped during those hours?In August, a rig came down the mountain into the township&#8217;s Georgetown neighborhood; it was bouncing with its brakes practically on fire. The smell of burning brakes lingered in the neighborhood for an hour.These tractor-trailer drivers are using the lame excuse that their GPS systems took them over the Five-Mile Mountain and down Giants Despair. The GPS excuse is bs. What about the 10 or so highly visible warning signs that they passed coming off the Turnpike and state Route 115? Why do you think they do it so late at night?These drivers know what they are doing by ignoring the warning signs. They are taking a shortcut and risking their lives and every life down below. Sooner or later, mark my words, one of these rigs is going to barrel through a house in Laurel Run or Georgetown and kill people. Or it will roll over a car up on the mountain and wipe out everyone inside.Residents of Bear Creek, Trailwood and Laurel Run, you need to call 911 when you see these trucks coming. The 911 dispatcher will get in touch with the township police, who can intercept them at the bottom of Giants Despair as they enter the township.These unsafe rig drivers are giving all of you safe, professional drivers a bad name, and you need to start policing your ranks by telling these idiots to stop this nonsense.Enough is enough. I implore all of our officials to get together and figure something out before there is a tragedy. Chuck RevittWilkes-Barre Township
