St Mary’s HIgh School celebrates 50th reunion

One was in line to be Maryland&#8217;s head coach. The other is just beginning his audition for the job.The Terrapins&#8217; past and present will meet in Baltimore on Saturday as Mike Locksley&#8217;s first game as Maryland&#8217;s interim coach comes against Penn State and James Franklin, his former colleague.Franklin was once appointed head coach in waiting at Maryland, in line to take over for Ralph Friedgen. But that arrangement was scrapped when Kevin Anderson took over as athletic director in College Park and Franklin ultimately took the head job at Vanderbilt.Anderson, meanwhile, hired Randy Edsall, a York County native who had lifted a lowly UConn program to a Fiesta Bowl bid.Anderson then had to fire Edsall two weeks ago after he went 22-34 in four-and-a-half seasons. Locksley, the offensive coordinator, will fill in for the rest of the season.&#8220;Got tremendous respect for him as a coach,&#8221; said Franklin, who worked with Locksley for five years at Maryland. &#8220;That was kind of early in my career, and me and Mike built a strong relationship. I&#8217;ve got a lot of respect for him and what he does with his job. Excited for the opportunity that he has there.&#8221;&#8220;James has always been an enthusiastic guy and has been very passionate from the times that we&#8217;ve worked together,&#8221; Locksley said. &#8220;From afar, I&#8217;ve seen how he&#8217;s matured and grown as a coach, and the success that he&#8217;s had as a head coach. I have a lot of respect for the job that he&#8217;s done. I&#8217;m excited about having the chance to go compete.&#8221;Locksley was picked in part because he has head coaching experience, albeit with poor results. Locksley went 2-26 at New Mexico before being fired midway through his third season with the Lobos.Though Maryland seems likely to bring in its new head coach from outside the program, Locksley may still yet have a role in the Terps&#8217; future as he has long been considered an elite recruiter and is tasked with holding together their 2016 class.&#8220;The thing that we really stress is to have fun and play football in its purest form,&#8221; Locksley said. &#8220;It&#8217;s back in the day when you&#8217;d go out and play with your friends in the backyard and you just let it all cut loose.&#8220;That&#8217;s the kind of mentality we want to play with because we really have nothing to lose as a program.&#8221;THREE AND OUTSurprise, surpriseOn the field, the Nittany Lions are preparing for just about anything. With the Terps sitting at 2-4, it&#8217;s going to take a significant surge to return to a bowl game.Maryland had a bye week to prepare for this game and has seemingly ended the team&#8217;s ineffective three-man quarterback rotation. Locksley has settled on junior scrambler Perry Hills, who set a school record for rushing yards by a quarterback against Ohio State with 171.The Lions are expecting to see plenty of keepers and read-option calls as the Terps shift away from a passing game that has thrown a miserable 17 interceptions in six games.More than anything, it&#8217;s the potential for surprise plays that have the Lions wary.&#8220;We have to be prepared for the onside kick,&#8221; Franklin said. &#8220;We have to be prepared for the fake punts. We have to be prepared for the double passes. They&#8217;ve got an opportunity to play Penn State and obviously get a win that&#8217;s really important to them, and I could see them doing whatever they have to do to get it.&#8220;We need to make sure that we&#8217;re not chasing ghosts &#8230; but I could just see them coming in and being really aggressive and taking some calculated risks.&#8221;A Likely dangerOne of those risks will be an increased role for cornerback William Likely. The All-Big Ten performer has multiple career touchdowns on interception returns as well as kick returns and punt returns.Against Ohio State, Likely even got in on offense as the Terps looked to get the ball in the hands of arguably their best athlete.Expect to see more of that against Penn State.&#8220;Because he&#8217;s been doing it a couple of weeks now, we&#8217;ve been able to add a few things in there,&#8221; Locksley said. &#8220;You&#8217;ll see him there, not just in the red zone, but maybe throw him there when we need a play made or just to find a way to create a spark for us on offense.&#8221;Shake on itThere will, of course, be an inordinate amount of attention paid to the pregame handshake.As everyone remembers, Maryland&#8217;s captains drew a reprimand from the Big Ten for refusing to shake hands with Penn State players before the coin toss at midfield last year.&#8220;I&#8217;m pretty sure,&#8221; Locksley said, &#8220;we won&#8217;t have any issues with showing great sportsmanship heading into this game.&#8221;The Terps will, however, be wearing throwback jerseys from the 1961 season for the game.Why 1961? Because that was the first year Maryland beat Penn State. The Terps didn&#8217;t match the feat again until last season&#8217;s win at Beaver Stadium.And it&#8217;s that memory that bugs Lions players more than any handshake.&#8220;Every loss, you try and move on,&#8221; defensive tackle Anthony Zettel said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s always in the back of your mind any time you lose to a team you know you should be able to beat. It&#8217;s definitely in the back of your mind.&#8221;<style>
