<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; State Sen. Lisa Baker tweeted Tuesday was a &#8220;picture perfect day,&#8221; urging people to get out and vote.</p><p>If the picture was a family photo taken at the polls, it&#8217;s likely 80 percent of the family members would be missing.</p><p>As expected, turnout Tuesday at the voting polls has been low &#8212; very low. At least for the beginning of the day.</p><p>With contested races in Luzerne County and several municipalities, eligible voters still weren&#8217;t motivated to exercise their right to vote.</p><p>One poll worker said turnout was so low, they might run a special to allow voters to go through twice. The worker was kidding, of course, but the light voter turnout was no joke.</p><p>Voters were to decide several important races:</p><p>&#8226; Will Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis keep her job or will Vito DeLuca get the support to unseat her?</p><p>&#8226; Who will be Wilkes-Barre City&#8217;s next mayor &#8212; former police chief and current councilman Tony George or longtime taxpayer advocate Frank Sorick?</p><p>&#8226; Who will voters choose to sit on Luzerne County Council, Wilkes-Barre City Council, Plymouth Borough Council and many other town councils, boards of supervisors and school boards?</p><p>&#8226; And who will voters choose for the state Superior and Supreme courts?</p><p>These are all important races that affect local towns, school districts and county government, yet poll workers reported very low numbers Tuesday morning.</p><p>For instance:</p><p>&#8226; At Kistler Elementary School in South Wilkes-Barre, Ward 15 reported 127 votes tallied out of an eligible 1,056.</p><p>&#8220;We should have at least 250 voters by this time,&#8221; a poll worker said.</p><p>At Coal Street Park, where Wards 4, 8 and 9 vote, turnout was dismal, as well. Ward 4 reported 105 voters out of 1,200 eligible cast a ballot; Ward 8 had 83 of 1,318; and Ward 9 reported 59 of an eligible 788.</p><p>Paul Maher, who has worked city elections since 1969, said this, so far, has been one of the lowest turnouts he has ever seen.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been very light,&#8221; Maher said of the turnout. &#8220;But it was predicted that it would be a low turnout. I&#8217;ve been around a long time and we have a big mayor&#8217;s race, but the turnout is still low.&#8221;</p><p>At Dan Flood Apartments in Plymouth Borough, the consolidated first and second wards reported just 51 voters at 11:30 a.m. Rachel Jones, who has worked the polls for more than 30 years, was disappointed.</p><p>&#8220;If you don&#8217;t get out to vote, then you can&#8217;t gripe about the ones who got in,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Chip Mack, a judge of elections in Kingston, said turnout at the Kingston Recreation Center was very low. Only a few residents of Wards 7 and 8 had cast their ballots by noon. Poll workers said 39 voters showed up from Ward 8 and just 27 from Ward 7.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been very quiet,&#8221; Mack said.</p><p>Joe Dombek, 66, of Kingston, a retired schoolteacher, completed his ballot and offered to help with the turnout.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m ready to vote again,&#8221; he said, causing poll workers to chuckle.</p><p>Dombek said people who don&#8217;t vote forfeit their right to complain.</p><p>&#8220;People don&#8217;t vote because they think everybody is bad,&#8221; Dombek said. &#8220;I believe voting is an important civic responsibility. Next year we will be electing a president. If people don&#8217;t get more involved, we could lose our country.&#8221;</p><p>Wilkes-Barre Republican mayoral candidate Sorick perhaps said it best.</p><p>&#8220;I think people are more likely to vote for American Idol than for political candidates,&#8221; he said.</p><p>Sorick said he had visited all the polling places in the city and turnout was low at each one.</p><p>Sorick and George each said they felt good about their chances.</p><p>&#8220;I think it could go either way,&#8221; Sorick said.</p><p>&#8220;It looks pretty good for me,&#8221; George said.</p><p>Let the counting begin.</p><style>

As expected, voter turnout at the polls is low — very low
