When looking on paper at the Wilkes and Misericordia football teams, it looks like a mirror image of one another.In some aspects on the field, the programs are similar as well.That means when the two teams hook up on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cougars&#8217; Mangelsdorf Field, it&#8217;s anybody&#8217;s guess who will be the victor.The Cougars and Colonels are the only two offenses in the MAC averaging less than 20 points per game. On defense, they are two of just three teams allowing an average of more than 35 points per game.When on the field, both squads have had missed chance after missed chance and have run into bad luck all season. If they were running into good fortunes, they might have combined for as many as eight victories instead of where they currently stand with one combined win thanks to Wilkes defeating Delaware Valley in Week 2.&#8220;We&#8217;re a 1-and-7 football team and I think we&#8217;re playing a pretty good 0-and-8 football team,&#8221; Wilkes coach Trey Brown said. &#8220;They look bigger on tape than last year. They&#8217;re well coached. &#8230; It&#8217;s going to be a battle.&#8221;Sure there are plenty differences between the teams as well, Wilkes is one of the oldest programs in the MAC having been around for 70 seasons, while Misericordia is the newest in just its fourth season.In terms of stats, the Cougars are fourth in the league averaging 164.4 rushing yards per game, while the Colonels are last in the 10-team conference averaging just 81.9 yards on the ground. They&#8217;re paced by quarterback Jeff Puckett, who&#8217;s third in the MAC with 757 rushing yards.Puckett also paces the passing offense, which is second-to-last in the MAC, but he and receiver Juwan Petties-Jackson set school records last week as Puckett threw four touchdown passes and Petties-Jackson hauled in 165 yards and three TDs.&#8220;First and foremost I think he&#8217;s a hell of a competitor,&#8221; Brown said about Puckett. &#8220;I have tremendous respect for him as a person. I don&#8217;t even know him well, I just watch him on tape.&#8221;As for the passing game, Wilkes is picking up 252.8 yards through the air a game, while Misericordia is ninth with a 141.5 average. The Colonels&#8217; Ryan Dailey has 500 more passing yards than anyone else in the conference with 2,008. But the team will be without one of its top receivers Aaron Coyne, who leads the team in receiving touchdowns and yards; he injured his hand in practice earlier in the week. Dailey though started running more last week on designed runs, and he even led the team in rushing yards.&#8220;I&#8217;m always trying to pick up a few yards,&#8221; Brown said. &#8220;We haven&#8217;t run much QB power because if you&#8217;re gonna run him you better be OK if he gets banged up. I just felt we needed to give a little different wrinkle.&#8221;The Cougars&#8217; first freshman class will celebrate senior day in their final home game.Monarchs face MAC top rusherKing&#8217;s plays its final road game of the season on Saturday when the team travels to Annville to take on Lebanon Valley and the top rusher in the MAC, Brendon Irving, who is just 26 yards away from the 1,000-yard milestone.The Monarchs&#8217; two-game winning streak was snapped last week when they fell to MAC co-leader Albright even though they led in many offensive statistics.King&#8217;s held an advantage in yards of more than 100, picked up seven more first downs than the Lions, ran 20 more plays, and held the ball for nearly 10 more minutes. But the team was also picked off four times, in which Albright scored 24 points off the turnovers in a 10-point loss.If the Monarchs are going to tie LebVal in the MAC standings with a win, they will have to contain Irving, who has rushed for at least 100 yards in seven of his team&#8217;s eight games.
