H.S. FOOTBALL: Northwest pulls away from Holy Redeemer in 2nd half

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; For the last eight times Meyers and GAR met in the final regular season game, the Mohawks watched GAR celebrate on the field adjacent to their high school.</p><p>Finally, the Mohawks broke that stretch in dominating fashion with a 28-6 victory over the Grenadiers on Friday night at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium beating their crosstown rival for the first time since 2006.</p><p>&#8220;All that matters is that we won. It doesn&#8217;t matter if I scored,&#8221; said Mohawks senior running back Mark Robinson, who scored three touchdowns. &#8220;All week that&#8217;s all we preached was to break the streak and that&#8217;s what we came out and did.&#8221;</p><p>Not only did the Mohawks best their city rival, the wins secures a berth in the Eastern Conference Class 2A semifinals when they will host a game next week. Meyers also ended GAR&#8217;s season as it needed a win to advance to the Eastern Conference.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an awesome feeling. Kids played great, coaches prepared them as best they could,&#8221; Meyers first-year head coach Jeff Labatch said.</p><p>Sure Robinson had a big part in the victory with a game-high 112 rushing yards, but the Meyers (7-3) defense was the biggest decider. The Mohawks had three takeaways scoring 14 points off the GAR turnovers and held the Grenadiers to just 187 total yards.</p><p>&#8220;We play as a team. We play together with passion, not emotion,&#8221; said Robinson about the defense where he starts at defensive back. &#8220;That means we love what we do and we do what we love.&#8221;</p><p>GAR (6-4) fumbled away the ball on its first two possessions. The second time is when the Mohawks capitalized getting the ball near the red zone. Robinson scored his first TD of the game to end the drive putting Meyers ahead 7-0 with 2:10 in the first.</p><p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t put the ball down. Out of 24 minutes in the first half I think we were on defense for 18 minutes. All the credit to Meyers, the staff and the players. We got outplayed, outcoached and outhustled,&#8221; GAR coach Paul Wiedlich Jr. said. &#8220;You can&#8217;t put the ball on the ground and you can&#8217;t have the defense out there that long in a game.&#8221;</p><p>With time winding down in the first half, Mohawks quarterback Willie Wallace found receiver Raheem Twyman in the end zone for a 24-yard scoring strike to take a 14-0 lead into the locker room.</p><p>A six-yard TD run by Robinson came in the fourth quarter to give the Mohawks a bigger cushion at 21-0 with just 5:41 left. But the Grenadiers struck quickly when Nate Luckey hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Austin Yelland putting GAR on the board, 21-6 with 4:35 remaining.</p><p>The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Meyers, but GAR still had hope of another fast scoring drive. That was halted when Robinson picked off a pass and ran 25 yards for the score extending the lead to 28-6 and sealing the win.</p><p>&#8220;I was just playing zone defense like we always do and it just happened,&#8221; Robinson said. &#8220;I was just in the right place at the right time. It could have been anybody.&#8221;</p><p>GAR&#8217;s Anthony Maurent, the Wyoming Valley Conference&#8217;s leading scorer, didn&#8217;t play in the second half after limping off the field in the second quarter. Even when he was in the game, the Mohawks kept him out of the end zone and held him to 64 yards on the ground.</p><p>&#8220;Keep him inside the tackles.
