Wyoming Valley West wraps up unbeaten regular season with 48-7 victory over Williamssport

H.S. Football: Berwick grinds down Hazleton Area

<p>DALLAS &#8212; Every domino collapsed precisely for Dallas on Friday night.</p><p>The biggest, at least when the final seconds ticked off the clock, was capturing the Old Shoe Trophy by defeating Back Mountain rival Lake-Lehman 28-14.</p><p>But that bronze cleat affixed to a block of wood meant much more in the long run.</p><p>&#8226; The victory prevented Lehman (9-1) from finishing the regular season unbeaten for the first time in school history. Lehman played its first game in 1958.</p><p>&#8226; Shortly after the Mountaineers won thanks to two touchdown passes and a pair of touchdown runs by quarterback Matt Harrison, Wallenpaupack and Valley View lost their games in the Lackawanna Conference.</p><p>&#8226; When everything was added up, Dallas (6-4) was in the District 2 Class 3A playoffs, quite a feat for a team which lost three of its first four games.</p><p>There is one more domino left and that falls Saturday night when Coughlin (6-3) hosts Tunkhannock (2-7). A Coughlin win would send Dallas to Scranton Prep (9-1) for the D2-3A semifinals next weekend. A Coughlin loss would mean a trip to Berwick (8-2) instead.</p><p>&#8220;This is all about those kids,&#8221; Dallas coach Rich Mannello said. &#8220;It was a great effort all around. And there were times in that game where the momentum changed and they kept playing. My hats off to Lake-Lehman. Tremendous season, tremendous season. And they&#8217;re not done.&#8221;</p><p>Lehman, though, dropped to the second seed in the D2-2A playoffs and will host Lakeland (6-4) in the semifinals next weekend.</p><p>As for the momentum, it swayed at 9:35 of the fourth quarter when Lehman receiver Noah Gorski made a diving catch in the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown to tie the score 13-13. Dallas blocked the extra point, but was penalized for too many players on the field. The Black Knights received another crack at the kick, and Ian Dawsey drilled it for a 14-13 lead.</p><p>After the teams exchanged possessions, Harrison came up big with a 52-yard pass to receiver Tanner Gattuso to the Lehman 18-yard line. Three runs by Bret Storrs placed the ball at the 4 where Harrison rolled left and then darted into the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown with 3:58 to play.</p><p>Harrison had two choices &#8212; run or pass &#8212; but when the Lehman defenders committed one way he committed the other.</p><p>&#8220;It was a sprint out pass,&#8221; Harrison said. &#8220;Their two defenders just ran with the two receivers and there was no one in the flat. So I just took off.&#8221;</p><p>Harrison sealed the game with a 7-yard TD run with 2:02 remaining.</p><p>Lehman entered the game with two 1,000-yard backs &#8212; Nick Eury and Joey Vigil &#8212; and averaging 358 yards rushing per game. The Black Knights exited with a season-low 161 rushing yards and Vigil injured.</p><p>&#8220;It was just preparation all week,&#8221; said Dallas linebacker Cole Dixon, who spent plenty of time in the Lehman backfield. &#8220;Coach (Jason) Anderson, our defensive coordinator, helped us out a lot. He picked up on plays that we could just pick apart. And especially the D-line. They were the ones picking up blocks for me, taking on blocks, and I was getting a free shot at them.&#8221;</p><p>Dallas set the tone early as receiver Stone Mannello took a short slant pass and made a move on a defender for a 56-yard TD catch-and-run. Harrison added a 20-yard touchdown pass to Gattuso on a fourth-and-17 play at 4:15 of the second quarter for a 13-7 lead. The quarterback prevented a disaster by leaping high for an errant shotgun snap.</p><p>&#8220;People say in high school football, &#8216;What are you going to do? You have a whole week?&#8217;&#8221; Lehman coach Jerry Gilsky said. &#8220;We&#8217;ll be ready to go on Monday. That&#8217;s my job.
