Rain expected in the Wyoming Valley into the midweek

<p>A few weekends ago I traveled to Lorton, Virginia to visit my granddaughter Kai for her birthday. She turned 6 and just had to have Grandma and Grandpa there for the celebration. You see, she knows that Grandma and Grandpa always bring the coolest presents. Last Christmas she wanted a life sized stuffed cheetah, BOOM, she got it. Yes, we spoil her and that is a grandparent&#8217;s right. My grandparents spoiled me, my parents spoiled my kids and now it is my turn.</p><p>One birthday tradition we have is the birthday person gets to pick where they go for dinner. When we asked Kai where she wanted to go we expected to hear McDonalds, Burger King or for pizza. Instead she hit us with, &#8220;I want to go for hibachi.&#8221; Wow, what a surprise!</p><p>When we got to the restaurant, Tokyo One, we were seated around the usual style hibachi table, Kai in between Grandma and Grandpa. I went right to the beer menu. They had the usual Miller&#8217;s, Coors and Bud choices so I went to the import section which I knew would contain better choices. Since I was at a hibachi restaurant I thought I would go with a Japanese beer. I settled on Kirin Ichiban.</p><p>Ichiban is brewed by the Kirin Brewery Company in Tokyo, Japan. It is considered one of the most prominent and respected breweries in the world. Established in 1888, the word Ichiban is synonymous with the highest quality beer. In Japanese folklore, Kirin refers to the mythical Chinese creature that is half dragon half deer. According to the legend, this animal refuses to step on living plants and will not eat any living things. Considered an indicator of favorable events, a Kirin is said to have appeared at the bedside of the mother of Confucius as she was about to give birth. As a symbol of well-being and good fortune, the Kirin was a perfect choice for the label of Kirin Beer.</p><p><strong>Sight:</strong> When I poured Ichiban into the pilsner glass, I saw a beautiful golden color along with a nice pure white head that finished at about 1 &#189; inches. The head lasted through the first three or four sips. This was a nice looking beer. Its fizz was prominent and rose to the top in the middle of the brew.</p><p><strong>Aroma:</strong> There was nothing fancy here. Ichiban had an almost light beer aroma typical of a single malt brew. No fruits, no spices, just a nice, smooth beer aroma.</p><p><strong>Taste:</strong> With my first sip I tasted the earthly grains with back notes of mild hops, almost like a cracker. Ichiban went down smoothly with little to no after bite. It is a clean, full bodied beer, perfect for the simple beer lover.</p><p>Overall, Ichiban was a nice beer. If you are expecting something fancy, this beer is not it. If you want simple beer flavors I recommend giving this a try. I drank mine with a lobster and scallop hibachi, a perfect combination. I recommend drinking Ichiban with a steak or burger from the grill. Just because it is getting colder doesn&#8217;t mean you cannot grill. If you want to give Kirin Ichiban a try, take the family for Hibachi or even Sushi.</p><p>Don&#8217;t forget to check out the Beer Meister along with other Times Leader employees who are participating in our version of No Shave November/Movember and raising money for colon cancer awareness.
