Pennsylvania proposes tighter vaccination rules for school students

<p>BERWICK &#8212; A male suspect and a Berwick police officer were injured Monday afternoon in a shooting following a car crash at a local business park.</p><p>Berwick police said they were dispatched at 2:32 p.m. to report of a motor vehicle accident at the BIDA Complex at Third and Oak Streets.</p><p>The driver of the vehicle, James Calderone, 35, of Salem Township, was reportedly involved in a domestic dispute prior to the crash, was armed, fired several shots into the air prior to police arriving.</p><p>Upon arriving on scene, Berwick Police Officers encountered Calderone and verbally ordered him to drop his weapon, but Calderone fired several shots at the officers who returned fire, striking Calderone in the torso and legs.</p><p>Calderone was secured into police custody, and officers immediately provided first aid until EMS responded. He was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville for fufther treatment.</p><p>A Berwick Officer sustained a shrapnel wound to the temple after being struck by a piece of metal due to Calderone&#8217;s gun. The officer was treated and remained on scene.</p><p>Berwick police Chief Kenneth Strish said in a press release Monday evening that he was &#8220;confident that the investigation will prove that the officer&#8217;s actions were necessary and justified.&#8221;</p><p>Berwick police said the investigation will be handled by the Columbia County District Attorney&#8217;s Office and Pennsylvania State Police.</p><style>
