Big second half lifts Wyoming Valley West

LEHMAN TWP. &#8212; Lake-Lehman proved last Friday was an anomaly.Proved it big time.The Black Knights rushed for a season-high 451 yards &#8212; seven days after their worst rushing performance of the season &#8212; to dominate Lakeland 35-8 in a District 2 Class 2A semifinal game Friday night.Lehman (10-1) will head to the championship game for the first time since 2013. The Black Knights will travel to defending D2-2A champion Dunmore (10-1) to decide the title at 7 p.m. Friday.&#8220;Last year we lost to them (in the semifinals) and we want to go up there with revenge,&#8221; Lehman running back Nick Eury said. &#8220;I&#8217;m a little angry from last year. The whole team is a little angry.&#8221;Eury led the attack with a career-high 302 yards and two touchdowns on just 19 carries. On his final run &#8212; an 86-yard TD for Lehman&#8217;s final score with 3:47 to play &#8212; he swatted away a couple Lakeland defenders well down field.Sophomore Trey Borger, starting in place of injured 1,000-yard rusher Joey Vigil, added 143 yards and two TDs.By comparison, Lehman had 161 yards on the ground in last week&#8217;s 28-14 loss to Dallas.&#8220;I think we went into the game thinking we were going to destroy Dallas,&#8221; Lehman lineman Mason Rios said. &#8220;That it wasn&#8217;t going to be a game. When we came out, we came out with bad intentions. But we just got smacked in the mouth when we came out.&#8221;Mason and his fellow interior linemen &#8212; Penn State recruit Connor McGovern, Kaleb Konigus, Nate Pavlichko and Cole Spencer &#8212; and tight end Zach Brucher did most of the smacking Friday. They set the tone early, opening holes for runs of 10 and 32 yards by Eury followed by a 21-yard TD run by Borger in Lehman&#8217;s first possession.By halftime, Lehman was up 21-0 as Eury added a 3-yard scoring run and Borger ran in from 30 yards. The latter touchdown was set up by a 40-yard run by Eury.And last week&#8217;s loss, which prevented Lehman from finishing with its first unbeaten regular season in school history, was a distant memory.&#8220;It was a tough loss,&#8221; Lehman coach Jerry Gilsky said. &#8220;You know what it tastes like when you lose. You remind your kids, but Monday when you come in you have to move on. It&#8217;s a work day. The kids responded well. It opened our eyes and on film it showed us our mistakes. And those guys that we ripped into on film really corrected themselves this game.&#8220;They came out to play. It&#8217;s amazing what a week could do for you and a loss could do for you in a way.&#8221;About the only real sore spot was penalties. Lehman totaled 15 of them for 126 yards. Gilsky said he would have to look at the film to sort out what happened with them.Lakeland moved no closer than the Lehman 23-yard line in its seven first-half possessions. Trailing 28-0 early in the fourth, the Chiefs pieced together four short-to-medium passes to score their only touchdown.
