<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Over 1,000 bowls lined several tables inside Henry Student Center of Wilkes University.</p><p>The bowls were of all shapes, sizes and colors. Some even had lids, elaborate paint designs and handles.</p><p>The unique bowls, however, had one thing in common &#8212; they were empty.</p><p>The bowls were part of Wilkes University&#8217;s fourth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. Potters created the handcrafted bowls not for others to fill them with soup or other hot goodness, but to serve as reminders of the less fortunate with empty bowls worldwide.</p><p>Attendees paid $15 for a homemade bowl, along with a serving of soup, bread and a drink. All proceeds will benefit local food banks, including one belonging to Luzerne County Community College, St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen and others.</p><p>Jean Adams, coordinator for the event, explained that Empty Bowls is a nationwide effort to help feed the hungry. A potter herself, Adams used to make pottery to send out to other Empty Bowls events outside the area.</p><p>Her reason for why she decided to bring the event to Wilkes-Barre was a simple one.</p><p>&#8220;We have hungry people here in Wilkes-Barre,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We need to address it.&#8221;</p><p><strong>A variety of bowls</strong></p><p>A line of attendees snaked around the tables. People picked up bowl after bowl, trying to find the perfect one to take home.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to pick!&#8221; one onlooker explained.</p><p>Kimberly Warren had that same dilemma.</p><p>Warren, 43, of Plymouth, had a square bowl with a lid and another bowl with a unique shape and paint scheme. She eventually settled on the square bowl, which she referred to as a &#8220;trinket box.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;There&#8217;s really a variety here as far as size, shape and glazes,&#8221; Warren said. &#8220;I actually love pottery, I took a pottery class before, and so I have an appreciation for all the varieties here.&#8221;</p><p>Warren explained that she went to an Empty Bowls event in Massachusetts, and wanted to find one to attend locally. She called the event a &#8220;win-win&#8221; for patrons and the community.</p><p>&#8220;We have a lovely, unique, handmade potter&#8217;s bowl that&#8217;s made by an artist, and it also benefits &#8230; the local food pantry for those in need,&#8221; Warren said.</p><p>Adams said the goal each year is to raise $15,000, which has not been met yet. She said about $10,500 was raised with last year&#8217;s event.</p><p>Along with that $15,000 goal, Adams said the goal is to have 1,000 bowls each year. She said &#8220;a handful&#8221; of people consisting of those from Wyoming Seminary, her own students and local potters all pitch in to make the bowls.</p><p>She was optimistic that this could be the year that the goal could be met.</p><p>&#8220;We had people here at a quarter of 11, and it didn&#8217;t start until 11:30, so that&#8217;s a pretty good sign,&#8221; Adams said. &#8220;I would love to reach that $15,000 goal.&#8221;</p><style>

<div class="metaInfo"><bylineMeta><p>By Travis Kellar</p><p>tkellar@www.timesleader.com</p></bylineMeta></div><div class="metaInfo"><factboxMeta><p><strong>Other events</strong></p><p>The Empty Bowls event is one of several that will highlight the plight of the hungry and homeless.</p><p>King&#8217;s College will present a series of programs in conjunction with the national annual Hunger for Justice Week, held Nov. 15-21.</p><p>Events will include:</p><p>&#8226; The 60-hour homeless experience in Monarch Court starts at 8 a.m., Monday, Nov. 16. Volunteers will set up a cardboard box on the campus lawn in a make-shift shelter to raise awareness for the plight of the homeless. It will end with a candlelight vigil in honor of and remembrance of the homeless at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in Monarch court. Donations will support local homeless agencies.</p><p>&#8226; Students will gather with guests and staff of Ruth&#8217;s Place Women&#8217;s Shelter to discuss what is being done to help those experiencing homelessness in our area and what individuals, local agencies, and our government can do to improve efforts. The event will take place at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the Postupak Room, McGowan School of Business, on N. River St.</p><p>&#8226; The Oxfam Hunger Banquet will be held on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Moreau Auditorium, J. Carroll McCormick Campus Ministry Center on W. Jackson St. Participants will be divided into populations that represent the percentages of people who have enough to eat and those who suffer from hunger</p><p>&#8226; The King&#8217;s community will give up meal(s) to raise money and awareness for the refugees from Syria. Proceeds raised throughout the day on Thursday, Nov. 19, will be donated to help Syrian refugees. An interfaith dinner and discussion will take place at 6 p.m. on the third floor of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center, located between North Franklin and North Main streets.</p><p>&#8226; Volunteers will prepare Thanksgiving bags from 9 a.m. &#8211; 3 p.m. on Saturday at Commission on Economic Opportunity, old Beiters Store/Kiss Theatre at 370 East End Center, Wilkes-Barre.</p></factboxMeta></div><div class="metaInfo"><shirttailMeta><p>Reach Travis Kellar at 570-991-6389 or on Twitter @TLNews.</p></shirttailMeta></div>
