Dunmore dominates Lake-Lehman 28-13 in District 2 Class 2A football title victory

<p>SCRANTON &#8212; Berwick coach George Curry said after Friday&#8217;s 37-7 loss to Scranton Prep in the District 2 Class 3A championship game that he is retiring.</p><p>&#8220;Yeah, it&#8217;s over. I&#8217;m done,&#8221; said Curry shortly after wiping tears from his eyes. &#8220;I&#8217;ll be 71 next Sunday. When I came back, I said I&#8217;d do it for three years. I did it for four.&#8221;</p><p>Curry finishes his career with a 455-99-5 record and with the most coaching victories in Pennsylvania high school football. He won six PIAA state championships, tying him with Southern Columbia&#8217;s Jim Roth.</p><p>Curry submitted a letter of resignation shortly after the football program was closed down for two weeks in May as the school district conducted an internal investigation into a couple issues, including the transfer of two student-athletes from Nanticoke.</p><p>The school administration found no wrongdoing on Curry&#8217;s part. The two student-athletes were denied eligibility for football by the District 2 athletic committee and later again upon appeal to the PIAA Board of Directors.</p><p>Curry, though, left the door open for a possible return in 2016, saying he wanted one more year to coach the current junior class as seniors. However, he also said his health would be a determining factor. The 70-year-old coach has needed assistance at times on the sidelines and occasional coached parts of games while sitting on a large water container.</p><p>On Friday night, he was shuttled to and from the field in a golf cart.</p><p>Curry started his coaching career at Lake-Lehman in 1967. After four seasons, he moved to Berwick in 1971 and turned the program into a state and national power. He resigned in 2005, but returned at Wyoming Valley West in 2006. He retired from coaching in 2008, citing health concerns.</p><p>After Gary Campbell Jr. resigned as Berwick&#8217;s coach a few months before the start of official practice in 2012, Curry took the job on an interim basis. He remained at Berwick for four years as the Dawgs made four appearances in the D2-3A championship game, winning the title in 2013.</p><style>
