VA celebrates family care givers with a health fair

<p>SHAVERTOWN &#8212; A little patience and a lot of laughter were essential learning tools on Saturday as a few area parents gathered for professional advice on styling their daughters&#8217; hair. Fledgling stylists and amused little girls filled a room at Age of Innocence Salon and Day Spa and jokes abounded at the struggle of trying something new for two local dads and one local mom.</p><p>At Daddy/Daughter Hair Class, father-oriented only in name, three parent/daughter pairs took on some easy and some not-so-easy hair styles. The goal was to improve the preparation process on mornings before school and other occasions that call for a bit of primping. It was the first of many classes where parents can bond with their daughters and streamline some daily routines said salon owner Lauren Carey.</p><p>&#8220;It was funny, because I started it as a daddy and daughter thing, as a bonding thing, and then half way through I got a message from someone who was like, &#8216;I&#8217;d love to do it. I&#8217;m a single mom&#8217; &#8230; so then we opened it up to mommies too,&#8221; Carey said. &#8220;It&#8217;ll be funny &#8230; because dads don&#8217;t know anything about hair, and moms have so much to do in the morning. It&#8217;d be nice if when the dad&#8217;s getting them dress if they could maybe just do something with their hair. They won&#8217;t learn it all in one day, but maybe they can get the basics down.&#8221;</p><p>Carey said Dustin and Jennifer Switzer of Dallas were the inspiration for the program.</p><p>&#8220;I saw an image where a male hair stylist had posted a picture,&#8221; Switzer said. &#8220;He got a whole thing together with a bunch of his friends who had daughters and had no idea what to do with their hair. So I thought, &#8216;Boy, I have no idea what to do with my daughter&#8217;s hair. Maybe I&#8217;ll hit up my friend Lauren and see if she&#8217;s interested in trying to get some interest generated for it.&#8221;</p><p>Switzer, in attendance with his 4-year-old daughter, Grace, talked about the importance of being able to do something with her hair.</p><p>&#8220;Everyone needs to know how to do their daughter&#8217;s hair,&#8221; Switzer said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a daily struggle &#8230; she goes to school every morning and she has to wear a uniform, so the only individuality she gets is in her hair and her shoes.&#8221;</p><p>Melissa Marcum of Dallas was there to learn with her 6-year-old daughter, Lily Horsefield.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m hoping to be able to French braid her hair, because I only can do a regular braid,&#8221; Marcum said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know how to do any of the fancy braids.&#8221;</p><p>Carey said her volume of tricks to teach includes everything from a simple pony tail to a sock bun, with different difficulty levels of braids in between. With Saturday&#8217;s crowd, she taught the pony tail, braid, French braid and fish hook braid. The first two were easily grasped, but the French braid proved to be a challenge.</p><p>Keeley Delaney of Harveys Lake said she hoped her daddy would learn how to put braids in her hair. Teddy Delaney, father of the 5-year-old, caught on to regular braiding rather quickly.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;ll make the mornings a little easier,&#8221; Delaney said. &#8220;In the morning, she complains a little bit if I&#8217;m tugging her hair a little too much, so I&#8217;ll try to be a little more sensitive.&#8221;</p><p>Carey said future events will be scheduled and she has a multitude of styles to show parents, but how far a class progresses depends on how quickly students pick up each style.
