They had a lead. Twice. And both times, the Penn State Nittany Lions couldn&#8217;t build on it. Actually, they couldn&#8217;t do much of anything, in any area of the field, against a Michigan team that pretty much dominated the second half after claiming a lead to keep at the end of the first half. If Penn State&#8217;s 28-16 defeat to Michigan did anything Saturday, it proved the Lions still have a way to go to play with the big boys again. For now, they&#8217;ll have to take solace in at least staying in a fairly meaningful game, at least for awhile.OFFENSEMade some big pushes, but too many times just couldn&#8217;t close the deal. Grade: C+OFFENSIVE LINE: Allowed four sacks and too much pressure for the offense to be effective consistently. Grade: D QUARTERBACK:With scouts from four NFL teams looking on, Christian Hackenberg took off on a couple of key first-down scrambles on a late field goal drive that got the Lions close, but too many of his passes were way off the mark. Grade: C-RUNNING BACKS: Not even the shifty twists of Saquon Barkley seemed to shake the pursuit of Michigan defenders. Take away the 56-yard burst Barkley broke off early, and he didn&#8217;t even manage half that total on his other 15 carries. Grade: CWIDE RECEIVERS: Totaled just nine catches and little more than 100 yards in a gameplan built around the air attack, which really took the air out of Penn State. Grade: DDEFENSENever really adjusted to Michigan&#8217;s short passing game, which rolled up 243 yards and two touchdowns while building an 11-point lead. Grade: CDEFENSIVE LINE: Sorely missed the presence of sack leader Carl Nassib, although Austin Johnson and Torrence Brown stepped up at times. Grade: C+LINEBACKERS:Troy Reeder and Jason Cabinda came uip with some big stops, just not enough of them. Brandon Bell thwarted an early threat with an interception. Grade: B-SECONDARY: Had trouble locking down Michigan&#8217;s out patterns, both short and deep. Grade: C-SPECIAL TEAMS: The Lions muffed a critical punt that set up Michigan&#8217;s final touchdown, the kicking game gave up a big 55-yard kick return with the game on the line and punting wasn&#8217;t real positive, either. The Lions did block a punt though, to set up their first touchdown. Grade: C-COACHING STAFF: Got pretty creative with some play-calling late, didn&#8217;t do enough to get touchdowns on two golden chances inside the 10-yard line.
