H.S. Boys Basketball: Nanticoke opens with win over Wyoming Valley West

BRODHEADSVILLE &#8212; Cooper Califano had 29 carries for 241 yards and six touchdowns Friday night as Old Forge stormed into the PIAA Class 1A state football semifinals with a 51-7 rout of Wyncote Bishop McDevitt at Pleasant Valley High School.Califano scored two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, got another in the third and the last one on the first play of the fourth quarter.And, on a night when the Blue Devils lost quarterback/free safety Joey Gutowski to a first-half knee injury, Califano had plenty of help.The line opened gaping holes in Bishop McDevitt&#8217;s gambling defense, which often brought 10 men close to the line of scrimmage. Fullback Brendan Mozeleski carried nine times for 105 yards and two touchdowns.Mando Sallavanti had two sacks and six teammates added one each for an Old Forge defense that did not allow a yard in the third quarter while it was forcing four turnovers.The third-quarter turnovers pushed a 26-7 halftime lead to 45-7.Old Forge advances to the state semifinals for the second time in three years.
