WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The city will take over the Hawkeye Security Solutions surveillance camera system at the end of the year after dissolving the non-profit corporation that currently operates it.City Administrator Greg Barrouk, a member of the Hawkeye board, said the takeover will begin after the next public meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the third-floor conference room&#8220;We are officially dissolving everything,&#8221; Barrouk said Thursday.Beginning Dec. 31, the system, which went online in 2010 and includes more than 200 cameras located throughout the city and a control center in the police headquarters, &#8220;will be a function of the city,&#8221; he said. It will be up to incoming mayor Tony George to determine what department will be responsible for the city, Barrouk said.The dissolution comes approximately two years after the board first discussed it due to declining revenues for the system built with millions in state and federal grants. The only paying customer for the service remains the Wilkes-Barre Parking Authority after the Wilkes-Barre Area School District decided not to renew its $270,000 multi-year contract in 2013.&#8220;There&#8217;s no real expense to the city,&#8221; Barrouk said.Every contract written and signed by Hawkeye will be changed to show the city is in charge of the system, Barrouk said. As a result, the revenue from the Parking Authority will go to the city.The last of the grants have been spent to complete upgrades to the system and leave it in &#8220;great working order,&#8221; Barrouk said.
