Moorhead ready to overhaul Penn State’s offense

H.S. basketball: Coughlin edges Lake-Lehman, 66-62

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Paul Guido was interested to see how his Holy Redeemer squad would react.</p><p>The Royals were dominated in their last game with always-tough Abington Heights.</p><p>Then Wednesday, the head coach watched as Crestwood jumped out to a 7-0 lead and his offense couldn&#8217;t hold onto the basketball.</p><p>That&#8217;s the last time the Comets led on the scoreboard.</p><p>Redeemer exploded out of a timeout, using a 16-2 run to break the game open, and two players netted double digits as the Royals held off a late charge, 50-43, in boys&#8217; basketball exhibition play.</p><p>&#8220;We just haven&#8217;t been shooting the ball well early in games, so I was happy with the way we knocked down some early tonight,&#8221; Guido said. &#8220;We needed to make some perimeter shots against them because they defend so well. It was a great night for us to break the seal. And I was anxious to see how we would respond because we did get our butts kicked in Clarks Summit against Abington.&#8221;</p><p>To say Redeemer was automatic may not be giving the team much credit.</p><p>Guido&#8217;s boys missed just two shots in the opening quarter, and six in the entire first half, taking an eight-point lead into halftime.</p><p>And every time Crestwood crawled back in the fourth quarter, Redeemer had an answer.</p><p>The Comets had it to within three with about five minutes left &#8211; only to see the Royals answer with an open lay-up from John Carr and James Kosik&#8217;s monster 3-pointer right from the wing in front of his bench.</p><p>Crestwood fought back one more time as Josh Malkemes&#8217; drive and bucket cut the Royal lead to four, 47-43, with just 1:26 remaining.</p><p>Again, a Redeemer answer &#8211; connecting on 3 of 5 from the charity stripe in the final seconds.</p><p>&#8220;A game like this was good for us,&#8221; Guido said. &#8220;We knew that Crestwood was going to give us a battle. We had a great day of practice before this game, and it carried over. For us to get that win against a team like Crestwood, which is always tough, it&#8217;s big for us. We are still kind of inexperienced.&#8221;</p><p>Really, that first quarter set the tone.</p><p>Crestwood got its perfect start.</p><p>Robby Hopkins drills a wide-open 3-pointer. Jason Klusewitz forces a steal and break-away layup. Mendall Foreman knocks down a shot.</p><p>Just like that, Crestwood leads 7-0 not even 90 seconds in.</p><p>&#8220;I give them a lot of credit because they knocked down a lot of shots,&#8221; Crestwood head coach Mark Atherton said. &#8220;We just gave them too many open jumpers in the first half, and it allowed their confidence to get pretty high. Offensively, we struggled.&#8221;</p><p>That&#8217;s when Guido saw his team&#8217;s resolve.</p><p>The Royals knocked down 6 of 8 once they settled into an offense, and followed it up with another strong second quarter.</p><p>Redeemer shot 12 of 18 from the floor in the opening 16 minutes, dropping six 3-pointers through the net.</p><p>&#8220;We did get off to a terrible start, and I called a time-out to get on them a little bit,&#8221; Guido said. &#8220;But our kids had heart. We might not be the prettiest looking team at times, and the passing might be sloppy, but I know that the guys won&#8217;t quit.&#8221;</p><p>The two teams combined for just 14 points in the third with Redeemer taking a 38-34 into the final period; a quarter where the Royals shot 4 of 6.</p><p>&#8220;I thought we had some momentum late in the game,&#8221; Atherton said. &#8220;We fought back because that&#8217;s the kind of team we are. We just have to learn from games like this, and move forward.&#8221;</p><p>Kosik had a game-high 12 points &#8211; hitting four 3-pointers&#8211; while Carr finished two rebounds short of a double-double with 10 points and eight boards.</p><p>Hopkins, Klusewitz and Malkemes combined for 31 of Crestwood&#8217;s 43 points.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Holy Redeemer 50, Crestwood 43</strong></p><p><strong>C `12`13`9`9 &#8211; 43</strong></p><p><strong>HR `16`17`5`12 &#8211; 50</strong></p><p><strong>CRESTWOOD (43)</strong></p><p>Hopkins 4 0-0 11, Blass 0 0-0 0, J.
