Jets top Cowboys 19-16, keep pressure on in AFC wild card

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Wyoming Seminary entered the Flo X-calibur Tournament stealing the No. 1 ranking in the country away from rival Blair Academy after claiming the title at the Ironman Tournament last weekend when both teams competed.Still, the Blue Knights needed to have a good showing at their own tournament at Wilkes University&#8217;s Marts Center to show it was for real after losing some key wrestlers to injury over the last few weeks.Sem did more than show it was serious over the weekend. The team did just what it needed to do: completely dominate.Wyoming Seminary crowned five champions and three second-place finishers to run away from the rest of the pack and claim its second straight X-calibur title racking up 279 points and nearly doubling the score of second place Bound Brook, which finished 131 points behind the winner.&#8220;It&#8217;s validation I think of everything that we do,&#8221; Sem coach Scott Green said. &#8220;You can invite 27 teams from seven states to compete in a tournament and we&#8217;re dominant. We&#8217;re getting eight guys in the finals, still getting five champs even though we increased the level of the event, and still winning over a third of the weight classes.&#8221;Will Verallis and Christian Dietrich both won titles to repeat as tournament champions at 160 and 195, respectively for Seminary in two of the more entertaining finals on the afternoon.Verallis, who took sixth at the National Prep Tournament last year and will wrestle at Old Dominion next season, won 3-2 in overtime against George Walton from Bound Brook.Dietrich, who will wrestle for the University of Pittsburgh next season, didn&#8217;t have to go to overtime to repeat, but got in a tight match with Stroudsburg&#8217;s John Jakobsen, who was PIAA Class 3A runner-up back in March. Dietrich fended off multiple shots by Jakobsen late in the match to hang on for a 3-1 victory after getting a takedown during the match.&#8220;We have pretty close styles so I had to work and get an angle to get in on the legs to take him down,&#8221; Dietrich said. &#8220;It&#8217;s nice to get the win again and know that I&#8217;m continuing to get better against the same competition. It shows that I can do well at 195.&#8221;Justin Hoyle (106 pounds), Jake Riegel (126) and Will Hilliard (220) also claimed titles for the Blue Knights, while Benny Baker (113), Jack Davis (120) and Trent Olson (132) all finished second.Davis, a sophomore from the Hanover area, was in a tight match with West Morris Central&#8217;s Shane Metzler in the final. Metzler won 3-2 and had to fight off numerous shot attempts by Davis in the third period to hang on to the victory.&#8220;I think that was a pretty good weight class and he just kinda got stuck trying to force some things that weren&#8217;t there instead of wrestling the way he has in his last 10 or so matches,&#8221; Green said about Davis. &#8220;It&#8217;s disappointing, but when you wrestle as many hard matches as Jack Davis, you&#8217;re gonna have one when you&#8217;re not at your best. And he lost today, but he&#8217;s gonna find ways to win when he doesn&#8217;t have all his stuff going.&#8221;Only one wrestler from the Wyoming Valley Conference reached Saturday&#8217;s semifinals with Wyoming Valley West&#8217;s Jon Lagoski. But the senior fell in the semis to Walton before eventually finishing sixth in the 160-pound bracket.The Spartans, who could be in a bit of a rebuilding season, were the WVC team with the most medalists picking up four medals. Freshman David Krokowski (106) took fifth, Wayne Smith (120) was seventh, while TJ Pashinski finished fifth at 170.&#8220;The guys that did wrestle over the weekend they did a phenomenal job,&#8221; Valley West coach Ryan Vassello said. &#8220;I&#8217;m gonna give credit where credit is due and I gotta give credit to all the guys that work hard.&#8221;Lake-Lehman, which led the four WVC teams in points with 58 to finish in 19th to the Spartans&#8217; 21st, walked away with three medalists. The Black Knights&#8217; highest finisher was Bobby Lipski&#8217;s fifth-place at 138. Tommy Williams won via fall in the 182-pound seventh-place bout, while Mike Slivinski finished eighth at 220.Pittston Area also grabbed a medal with Jason Deboard grabbing fifth at 160 defeating Lagoski via forfeit in the weight&#8217;s fifth-place bout.Benton/Northwest finished third in the team standings with 141 points while advancing three to the finals and crowning one winner with Alan Diltz winning the gold at 113. Joe Klock took second at 106, while Mike Stuart was runner-up at 138.Berwick DualsIn five duals, Dallas went 3-2 defeating Catasauqua (35-27), Oley Valley (37-36) and Honesdale (42-27), while falling to West Scranton (54-24) and Conestoga (42-33). The host Bulldogs went 0-4 in the event falling to West Scranton (61-18), Honesdale (48-27), Oley (45-24) and Catasauqua (42-30).Having a big day for the Mountaineers were Alec Sampson and Cole Dixon, who both picked up five victories on the day, both had two pins in the 5-0 effort.Steven Newell ended the day 4-1 for Dallas with a pair of pins, while Xavier Barber also went 4-1 with all four of his wins coming via fall. Daniel Burkhart also ended the day with four wins, including two by pin.For Berwick, Travis Dent picked up four wins, including three falls, while Luke Fisher also grabbed four wins with two pins and two by decision.Alec Talanca and Matt Maczuga each had three wins consisting of a three pins for Berwick.Sheetz ClassicTunkhannock continued its red-hot start to the season claiming the victory of the tournament at Penn Cambria High School piling up 174 points to defeat second-place St. Mary&#8217;s by three points. Hazleton Area also competed in the event and finished fifth with 130 points.The Tigers, who picked up their second tournament victory in three weeks, were helped by second-place finishes from Dakota Quick and Sam Rice. They also picked up third-place medals from Tommy Traver, Mike Manley and Dalton Ray, while Jake Richards and Bill Manley placed fifth.For the Cougars, Jimmy Hoffman and Carson Kinney each won golds with Kinney knocking off Rice in the finals. Jake Maurer, Anthony Martoccio and Keith Lowery all took sixth for Hazleton Area, while Chris Lasecki was eighth.Wyoming Area 78, Mountain View 6Robin Wrobleski (120), Kendrick Beyer (138), Patrick Heck (145), Zachary Briggs (170), Adam Buczynski (182) and Damon Barhight (285) all won by pin for the Warriors.Hanover Area 61, Mountain View 0Winning by fall for the Hawkeyes in the dual held on Friday were Jeff Bennett (120), Tom Mercadante (170), Isaiah Stebbins (195) and Nick Hannon at 285.Hanover Area also got help via technical falls from Zakee Nettles (138) and Owen Davis (145).X-calibur TournamentTeam Scores1.
