<p>SCRANTON &#8212;The box of scarves was big, somewhat dusty and its owner insisted a buyer would have to take the whole lot, not just a few of its contents.</p><p>So Jerry Smith and his partner, Bill Carite, who are &#8220;always on the hunt&#8221; for antiques and collectibles, recently walked away from a potential purchase at the Circle Flea Fair in Dickson City.</p><p>They didn&#8217;t get far before Carite&#8217;s instincts told him they should go back and buy the scarves.</p><p>After all, he reasoned, something in the box was bound to appeal to customers at the Maid Marion Consignment &amp; Gift Shop that Smith owns and Carite tends on Oram Street in West Scranton.</p><p>When they got the box home and dug all the way to the bottom, they were amazed and delighted to find what they believe to be vintage treasures: three Hermes silk scarves and a Lanvin silk scarf as well as a &#8220;St. Ives&#8221; scarf that depicted an artist&#8217;s rendering of a cat and tea cups.</p><p>A letter that accompanied the last scarf appears to have been signed in 1985 by British artist Patrick Heron, son of a famous pacifist and clothing manufacturer.</p><p>And if a patient reader squints at some of the harder-to-decipher words, the younger Heron&#8217;s cursive scrawl seems to explain &#8220;the design for this scarf was made in 1948 for my father, Tom Heron, founder of Cresta Silks, when I was still designing most of the Cresta textiles. But it was never printed at the time. I only discovered it again in December 1984.</p><p>&#8220;Now it has been printed by Alexander MacIntyre in the original colours on the occasion of The Tate Gallery&#8217;s 1985 exhibition, &#8216;St. Ives 1939-1964, Twenty-five Years of Painting, Sculptures and Pottery.&#8217;</p><p>&#8220;It shows St. Ives, the harbor and the bay as seen from the balcony window of the studio cottage on the sea wall which I and my family occupied every year for some months from 1947 to 1955.&#8221;</p><p>Smith and Carite don&#8217;t know how valuable the scarves might be; they&#8217;re thinking of sending photographs to Vogue magazine to see if experts there might know. For now, they believe they got a bargain because they paid less than $50 for about 25 scarves as well as about 25 pairs of vintage ladies gloves that were in the box.</p><p>&#8220;At a flea market, I don&#8217;t mind getting dirty. You have to hunt,&#8221; said Smith, adding he and Carite are excited about the sense of history the scarves and gloves exude.</p><p>They appreciate the glamour of old-time accessories, as a visit to the Maid Marion Consignment &amp; Gift Shop will reveal. Here customers can find beaded handbags, vintage pins, an honest-to-goodness fur muff and the kind of aurora borealis clip-ons that probably shimmered like rainbows on your great-grandmother&#8217;s ears in the 1940s.</p><p>&#8220;You know who buys a lot of this? Young people, teenagers,&#8221; Carite said, showing off such items as a 1950s-style evening dress that had an underskirt of netting, a pair of leopard print high-heels and a fur coat that had come from Oppenheim&#8217;s, a long-established Scranton department store that closed in 1980.</p><p>&#8220;A lot of items start at $8,&#8221; Carite said. &#8220;We want them to be reasonable so customers will be able to come back.&#8221;</p><p>The shop also carries lines of soap, body scrub, jewelry, painted glassware and doll clothes crafted to fit American Girl dolls, with many of the products created by local crafters.</p><p>The merchandise changes frequently, sometimes even on the spur of the moment, as when a customer told Carite she liked a pair of vintage shoes but they weren&#8217;t fancy enough. &#8220;I took a pair of clip-on ear-rings and attached them to the shoes,&#8221; Carite said. &#8220;She loved them.&#8221;</p><style>
