<p>Matt Murray gained a lot during his first NHL stint with Pittsburgh last month.</p><p>Except confidence.</p><p>Murray had plenty of that prior to his first NHL start on Dec. 19; particularly after <a href="http://theahl.com/pens-murray-voted-ahl-s-top-goalie-p197446" target="_blank">all his accomplishments</a> during his short pro career, confidence comes quickly and it stays.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m always a pretty confident guy. If I&#8217;m in the right place mentally I know I can be successful any given night,&#8221; Murray said. &#8220;I try to bring that confidence with me every place I go.&#8221;</p><p>He certainly had it in Pittsburgh, and it showed on the ice. Murray made four starts with the big club, winning twice and posting a 1.72 goals against average and a .938 save percentage. Those are numbers that would be the envy of any goaltender, but for Murray it&#8217;s the norm.</p><p>In his two AHL seasons, he has never had a goals against average above 2.00 and his save percentage has never been below .940. The reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year was superb in his rookie season last year, and judging by his success this season it was no fluke.</p><p>Even at the NHL level, where Murray never allowed more than two goals in a start and won over the Pittsburgh fans with his play to the point they chanted his name during a Dec. 30 game against Toronto.</p><p>That was something that the even-keeled Murray couldn&#8217;t help but be a little excited about.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not something you think about during the game, you&#8217;re focused on the next play,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I knew it was happening. After the game I checked my phone and my parents and family were all excited. Apparently you could hear it on television pretty well.&#8221;</p><p>Murray was re-assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last week when Marc-Andre Fleury returned from injury. In his first game back with the AHL Penguins, Murray picked up where he left off, limiting the Springfield Falcons to one goal on 31 shots to help his team erase a three-game losing streak.</p><p>For a team that had been without its top two goaltender for several weeks, Murray&#8217;s return was highly anticipated.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always great to have Murray back,&#8221; head coach Clark Donatelli said. &#8220;It&#8217;s good having him back in net and the guys play really hard in front of him.&#8221;</p><p>NOTES</p><p>- The Penguins were given the day off on Monday after winning both their games on Saturday and Sunday.</p><p>- The Penguins reassigned goaltender Brian Foster to the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) on Monday. Foster posted a 1-3-0-1 record in five games and recorded the first shutout of his AHL career with a 30-save effort against the Syracuse Crunch on Dec. 19.</p><p>- After being shut out in back-to-back games on Dec. 26 and 27, the Penguins offense has tallied seven goals in its last two games. Jean-Sebastien Dea has a goal and two assists in the last three games, while Sahir Gill and Bryan Rust each have two goals in that span.</p><style>
