On Monday, Councilman Mario Fiorucci invited me to his swearing-in ceremony at the Sugar Notch Borough Council meeting. To our great surprise, the mayor, William Davis, announced that he would not execute the will of the people who elected Fiorucci and swear him into office.The reasons given: Fiorucci exercised his constitutional right of freedom of speech in his newsletter and criticized the public official. Further, the mayor indicated that when Fiorucci served on the council the term before last, the council was impeded in its work and couldn&#8217;t get anything done &#8211; as if the council could not override one member.The force that should be operating in this case is the will of the people, not the personal will of the mayor.When my family was being evacuated from South Wilkes-Barre during the flood of 2011, Fiorucci offered us refuge in his house, as he has so many homeless and disadvantaged people. He is a political scientist with a master&#8217;s degree from the prestigious Georgetown University.Our hope is education, understanding and effectiveness will prevail and the elected councilman, Mario Fiorucci, will be sworn in as a council member.Richard AstonWilkes-Barre
