Few things can warm your soul on a cold winter day better than a bowl of chili. But who has the time to sit around for hours waiting for the hearty concoction to simmer to perfection?

What if I said you could have the best chili of your life in about an hour? And what if I told you, in the wise words of an infomercial superstar, “Wait! There’s more!” This recipe is also extremely easy.

All you need is a handful of ingredients. Kitchen professionals may find their cabinets already stocked with all the ingredients needed to throw together this masterpiece. And, if not, like any good chili recipe, substitutions are gladly accepted.

We start with the basics — two pounds of ground beef and some chopped onion. Saute them together in a pan. When the meat is brown and the onion is tender, dump in the remaining ingredients, along with a little black pepper, garlic salt and chili seasoning. A few cans of beans and tomato sauce. The salsa is where you really have the opportunity to spice up the flavor. A personal favorite is Arriba! brand Fire Roasted Mexican Red Salsa.

Mix it all together. Set to simmer. In about an hour, you’ll be enjoying a bowl of delicious chili in disbelief at just how easy it was.

<strong>Easy Award-Winning Chili</strong>

2 pounds ground beef

1/2 onion, chopped

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic salt

1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce

1 (16 ounce) jar salsa

1 package (1.25 ounce) chili seasoning mix

1 (15 ounce) can light red kidney beans

1 (15 ounce) can dark red kidney beans

Saute ground beef and onion in a large saucepan over medium heat until meat is browned, about 10 minutes. Drain grease. Add remaining ingredients, mix well, reduce heat to low and simmer for at least one hour.
