HAZLETON &#8212; The smallest player on the floor found a way to cut through all the giants in front of her during the second half.And because of it, Hazleton Area cut straight into the group of teams to beat in the Wyoming Valley Conference.Mackenzie Yori scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the second half Wednesday as the Cougars finally pulled away from Wyoming Valley West, 68-52 at Hazleton Area High School.&#8220;The mindset was just to get on track and get us rolling,&#8221; Yori said. &#8220;It was a big win for us.&#8221;Mainly because defeat could have been devastating to Hazleton Area.The defending WVC Division I champion, selected as preseason favorites by some to defend that crown, lost a fourth-quarter lead and fell to Dallas in Monday&#8217;s regular season opener. And in a division packed with contenders including Valley West, Pittston Area, Crestwood and Dallas, it&#8217;s easy to see why Cougars coach Joe Gavio tabbed the second game of the league season a must-win.&#8220;I think it was,&#8221; Gavio said. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t know what to expect. The best thing that could happen was we were at home. We are a different team at home.&#8221;The biggest difference-maker in Hazleton Area&#8217;s balanced scoring attack turned out to be Yori.Honored before the start for scoring her 1,000th career point in that game against Dallas &#8212; &#8220;I&#8217;ve been working for that goal my entire life,&#8221; Yori said &#8212; she managed just one basket in each of the first two quarters as Valley West stayed within range.But Yori broke loose after halftime, scoring eight points in the third quarter &#8212; twice as many as the 5-4 shooting guard managed in the first half &#8212; and suddenly a six-point game turned into a 12-point Hazleton Area lead entering the final quarter.Once the game reached that point, Yori snuffed out any more hope of another Spartans rally by scoring her final eight points while hitting four free throws to boost Hazleton Area&#8217;s lead to 15 points with under five minutes to play.&#8220;What changed? The second half, we just got everything flowing our way,&#8221; Yori said. &#8220;That created more openings.&#8221;For the bulk of the game, the Cougars couldn&#8217;t find much space.With Valley West fielding a front court of 5-11 forwards Jordan Reilly and Colleen Cwalina long-armed 5-7 Gabby Smicherko on the perimeter, the Cougars had plenty of problems crashing the boards.Instead, Hazleton Area relied on a pair of 3-point goals from Kendra Pfeil to build a quick 12-6 lead. But with Reilly stuffing three layups, Valley West roared back into a 14-14 tie by the end of the first quarter.Pfeil made two nifty layups in the final two minutes of the opening half as Hazleton Area re-opened an 11-point advantage. But Erin Gibbons wouldn&#8217;t let the Spartans surrender, scoring 13 of her game-high 21 points in the third quarter as Valley West closed within 37-31 near the end of the third quarter.&#8220;We knew coming in they were a lot taller than us,&#8221; Yori said. &#8220;We were prepared to get bodies on their defenders, and do what we know how to do &#8212; get shots off. And our whole team is pretty quick.&#8221;In the end, Valley West just couldn&#8217;t keep up, while falling to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in division play. Yori hit the gas in the final quarter while running a patient Cougars offense, and had plenty of help. Ashley Martincek finished with 15 points, including two free throws that took the Hazleton Area lead to 20 points. Pfeil wound up with 13 points, while Maddie Mrochko finished with 11.And the Cougars finished up by avoiding a second straight loss in the season&#8217;s first week.&#8220;That was just a good game for us,&#8221; Gavio said. &#8220;We left them (come) back a couple times. It&#8217;s been our problem. We know no lead is safe for us. Overall game was good. It&#8217;s got to get a little bit better.&#8221;Berwick 57, Coughlin 32Tori Talanca was 8 for 12 from the free-throw line as she tallied a team-leading 24 points for Berwick as they defeated Coughlin. Taylor Montana added 14 more points for the Bulldogs.Claire Curtis led the Crusaders with 14 total points.Pittston Area 48, Crestwood 44Taryn Ashby had a team-leading 17 points as she went a perfect 7 for 7 from the foul line during Pittston Area&#8217;s narrow defeat of Crestwood.
