Assistant city solicitor’s duties questioned by council

I would like to commend Bill Herbert for his excellent letter to the editor (&#8220;<a href="https://www.timesleader.com/opinion/letters/498896/letter-to-the-editor-allow-single-party-to-control-nation-so-policies-can-be-fully-evaluated" target="_blank">Give control to one party</a>,&#8221; Dec. 15). He stated that we should vote in one party&#8217;s members, leave them in for eight years and see what they could do for this great country of ours &#8211; without changing Congress to the other party, because the party in control didn&#8217;t change things overnight.There was a time when the two parties knew how to compromise, but that is in the past since the Citizens United came into effect. It is big money that is buying the politicians, and they are kicking the worker down the road.Only one presidential candidate is doing it the old-fashioned way by not taking big money, and nobody has ever heard of him: Sen. Bernie Sanders. As honest as the day is long and a down-to-earth, true-blue American. Isn&#8217;t that what we all are asking for?When the two parties compromised, we did well. The working man made a good living and the rich paid their fair share and also did well because they would reinvest in their businesses for the tax breaks. Everyone prospered until President Ronald Reagan came in and gave the rich big tax breaks. He said it was trickle-down economics, which never happened. Greed set in.People don&#8217;t seem to understand that it is taxes that pay the bills. Why is so hard to understand that if you cut taxes for the rich and you have nothing but low-paying jobs that your economy will suffer?Try it this way: Take away half your income and see how you run your household budget. Republicans want to spend more money on scaring us into another war that will only make the rich richer. We will lose more good American lives out of fear. So is this the government you want?Create jobs through rebuilding infrastructure, not by going to war. We need humans in office, not corporate puppets.Give people a job and you won&#8217;t have to spend so much time hating the guy who doesn&#8217;t have one (and who, as the right wing says, are freeloaders).Don&#8217;t let fear take away our freedoms.Dale EastmanMeshoppen
