Golf tourney raises funds for Clearbrook

First Posted: 9/15/2012 Mrs. Blanche Goehring Podehl, age 95, a former resident of Plains Township, died Thursday, September 13, 2012, at Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Podehl was born in Evans City, Pa., daughter of the late Harvey and Sarah Rape Goehring. 
She was a graduate of the Evans City High School, class of 1935, and earned her degree in home economics with the class of 1939, Pennsylvania State College (now Pennsylvania State University). 
She moved to Plains Township following her marriage and had been associated with her husband, Edward J. Podehl, in the operation of Podehl Greenhouses, Plains Township. In addition to assisting her husband, she had also worked as Director of Home Care with Home Health Services, Wilkes-Barre, and later, with Hospice St. John, Wilkes-Barre, for 12 years, retiring in 1980.
Blanche was a faithful member of the Plains United Methodist Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher and member of the United Methodist Women. 
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Edward J. Podehl, who died in 1988; sisters, Elsie G. Bell, Ina Cheers; and by a brother, Ralph Goehring.
Surviving are her children, Edward J. ("Ned") Podehl and his wife, Elizabeth ("Betsy"), Dallas; her daughter, Judy A. Shock and her husband, Thomas, Wilkes-Barre; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., a Golden Rule Funeral Home, 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with service at 11 a.m. in the Plains United Methodist Church, North Main Street, Plains Township. The Rev. Dr. Paul C. Amara, pastor, will officiate and interment will be in Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville. Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. 
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial donations in Mrs. Podehl's name are made to the Plains United Methodist Church, 133 N. Main St., Plains Township, PA 18705 or to Little Flower Manor, 200 S. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
