Luzerne County Children and Youth Advisory Board members question new manager hiring process

<p>NUANGOLA&#8212; The borough council is still considering conducting its own spraying program to combat gypsy moths in the spring of 2016.</p><p>Although according to comment at Monday&#8217;s meeting, neighboring municipalities may also be part of the program.</p><p>Rice Township has made an initial inquiry to be included in Nuangola&#8217;s program. The borough is considering spraying by Triple F Flying Inc. of Benton at a stated cost of $35 per acre. It is estimated that Nuangola has 609 acres that will require treatment.</p><p>Solicitor Jack Dean said that borough officials could enact a 1 mill tax to pay for the program, but that was left unresolved, pending further information from Rice and other neighboring municipalities, such as Newport and Hanover townships.</p><p>A mill is $1 in tax for every $1,000 in assessed property value.</p><p>Councilman Mark Gandzyk has inquired about federal funding through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but Gandzyk said he has not heard from the USDA.</p><p>Gandzyk suggested that the public contact and press state officials about funding to combat gypsy moths.</p><p>The council also acted to advertise a proposed real estate tax rate of .444 mills to help finance a 2016 budget of $195,000. On a 6-0 vote, the council advanced a resolution to enact an ordinance to solidify the tax assessment.</p><p>Also at the recommendation of Councilman Joseph Tucker, the council approved a final payment of $7,620 to the Ed Snukis Company to conclude work on the entrance way to the borough building.</p><p>In other matters:</p><p>&#8226; The council raised the salary for individuals engaged in snowplowing to $20 per hour.</p><p>&#8226; Following extensive complaints, Tucker reported that repairs have been made to North End Road after the street was allegedly damaged during sewer system installation.</p><p>&#8226; Councilman Michael Johnson said that a vacancy exists on the Nuangola Sewer Authority following the resignation of Gerard Maskinis.</p><p>&#8226; It was noted by Tucker that vacancies continue to exist on the zoning hearing board and planning commission. He also said there is a need to hire a solicitor for the zoning board and an engineer to advise the planning commission.</p><style>
