<p>SCRANTON &#8212; A Hazleton resident who illegally reentered the U.S. after being deported was sentenced this week to more than six years in federal prison for distributing over 500 grams of heroin.</p><p>Edwin Guerrero-Guerrero, who lived in Hazleton under the alias &#8220;Angel Dueno Matos,&#8221; was a Dominican national who snuck back into the U.S. after being deported, prosecutors said. It was the second time Guerrero-Guerrero, 35, had entered the country illegally, prosecutors said.</p><p>The U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office announced Wednesday that U.S. District Court Judge Richard P. Conaboy had sentenced Guerrero-Guerrero to 78 months in prison Tuesday for distributing the equivalent of 17,000 retail bags of heroin during the summer of 2014.</p><p>A joint investigation by the FBI, the Scranton Police Department and immigration enforcement agents with the Department of Homeland Security led to criminal charges against Guerrero-Guerrero in August.</p><p>During a raid of his Hazleton apartment, agents found between 500 and 600 bags of heroin hidden in ceiling tiles and a firearm underneath Guerrero-Guerrero&#8217;s mattress. He told police he was from Puerto Rico but was a U.S. citizen, according to court documents.</p><p>He pleaded guilty to the charges in September.</p><p>&#8220;Our communities are in the midst of a heroin epidemic that is bringing great harm to individuals, families, and whole neighborhoods,&#8221; Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa wrote in a sentencing note. &#8220;Defendants, like Guerrero-Guerrero, who are involved in distributing large quantities of heroin, must be held accountable for the harm they cause.&#8221;</p><p>Sempa asked the court to consider the brief time frame in which Guerrero-Guerrero moved the large amount of heroin and urged the judge to impose the high end of the allotted sentence for the offense, which ranges from 78 to 97 months in prison.</p><p>Conaboy ordered Guerrero-Guerrero to be placed on four years of supervised release following his sentence. He also faces possible deportation.</p><style>
