Zeroing In: It’s a new day in Wilkes-Barre City but will the rank and file support a female police chief?

DALLAS &#8211; The birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be celebrated with a week-long series of special events to be held at Misericordia University from Jan. 18 to 22.The schedule includes a presentation of &#8220;King&#8217;s Dream&#8221; by Key Art Productions, two showings of the movie &#8220;Selma,&#8221; and a unique ecumenical prayer service involving participants of many different faiths and religious traditions. All events, unless otherwise noted, are free and open to the public.The schedule begins Monday, Jan. 18 when the university hosts children from the McGlynn Learning Center in Wilkes-Barre for a program presented by students in the Misericordia University Department of Physical Therapy. The project includes exercise and anti-bullying activities and lunch for students from McGlynn Learning Center.From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Misericordia&#8217;s campus community and members of the public are invited to sign the United Nations Personal Pledge Against Racism in the lobby of the Banks Student Life Center. All are encouraged to tweet their own pledges or MLK thoughts with the hashtag #MUDream and to tag @MisericordiaU.Later in the day, the university will host the first of two showings of the film &#8220;Selma&#8221; chronicling King&#8217;s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965. A discussion will begin at 6 p.m. in Lemmond Theater in Walsh Hall and will be immediately followed by the film presentation.The Misericordia University Multicultural Club, in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Education, will host &#8220;Tastes of the World,&#8221; from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, where a sampling of multicultural foods prepared by club members and the Misericordia community will be presented in the Harold and Sallyanne Rosenn Lobby of Insalaco Hall, near the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery.At 7 p.m. artist Tom Varano will present an innovative program, &#8220;Emotion into Art,&#8482;&#8221; where fingertips, palms and multiple brushes are used to paint portraits of famous people on a 4&#8217; by 5&#8217; canvas in a matter of minutes. The interactive program will be held in the Lemmond Theater and will be choreographed to powerful loud music.For the second year in a row, Misericordia University will celebrate MLK week with a special ecumenical prayer service at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 20, in the University Chapel in Mercy Hall and will feature traditional prayer offerings and blessings by leaders from numerous faiths and religious traditions including Roman Catholicism, Independent Catholicism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Lutheranism.The Lemmond Theater in Walsh Hall will present &#8220;King&#8217;s Dream&#8221; at 7:30 p.m. This is an uplifting, multi-media presentation by Key Arts Production that brings to life the era of the American civil right movement through live commentary and captivating archival film footage.Selma will be shown a second time following a panel discussion at noon on Thursday, Jan. 21, in the Lemmond Theater which will include a reflection on racism hosted by students in the Multicultural Club and the Office of Multicultural Education.Misericordia University and Metz Culinary management will provide a soul food luncheon for Misericordia University students in the John and Mary Metz Dining Hall on Friday, Jan. 22.Poets, musicians and singers will re-establish poetry as a form of art at 8:30 p.m. on Friday in the Frank and Dorothea Henry Student Lounge.
