Wilkes-Barre native Dr. Bernard L. Remakus publishes latest book, ‘Lame Duck’

<p>CARBONDALE &#8212; 3 Guys and a Beer&#8217;d celebrated its fourth year of business Jan. 1 &#8212; a milestone the owners didn&#8217;t expect to reach 18 days earlier when they announced on their Facebook page they planned to close their doors for good at the end of 2015.</p><p>&#8220;We took a large hit financially throughout the summertime, which really set us behind,&#8221; said Johnny Waering, otherwise known as &#8220;Beard,&#8221; owner and head of sales. &#8220;And we&#8217;ve been playing catch-up ever since. As a group, we decided to &#8216;stop the bleeding,&#8217; overall. There&#8217;s only so much you can bleed before you die. And it was the hardest decision we ever had to make. At that point, there was really no light at the end of the tunnel for us.&#8221;</p><p>With heavy hearts, they made the decision to close.</p><p>But their customers and friends wouldn&#8217;t allow it.</p><p>&#8220;The amount of support that came from the community and everybody throughout the area saying, &#8216;Don&#8217;t stop,&#8217; &#8216;You guys can do this,&#8217; &#8216;You&#8217;ve come so far,&#8217; &#8216;Don&#8217;t quit.&#8217; There was just a countless amount of people who were offering tips, advice, well-wishes &#8212; it was great. With that amount of support, we couldn&#8217;t just go away,&#8221; Waering said.</p><p>After taking a second look at the business&#8217;s situation, the owners pulled a metaphorical &#8220;rabbit out of a hat,&#8221; moving into the new year with the brewery and taproom doors still open, with limited bottling and distribution.</p><p>Their patrons are thankful.</p><p>Meg Keen, of Tompkinsville, expressed her initial disappointment over the announcement the business would close.</p><p>&#8220;My family and I love 3 Guys&#8217; beer, and we spent quite a few nights at the taproom with lots of laughs, friends and especially flights of beer,&#8221; she said. &#8220;To hear they would be staying open was super exciting and just makes us want to support them even more.&#8221;</p><p>Keen described the atmosphere of the taproom as &#8220;fun and welcoming&#8221; and a place that &#8220;really makes you want to return.&#8221;</p><p>Another patron, Dave Maxwell, of Carbondale, said he respects the &#8220;spirit&#8221; of 3 Guys and a Beer&#8217;d.</p><p>&#8220;They have a passion and worked very hard to make quality products for our area,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s really great to see that drive and dedication to contribute to our local culture. I was proud to see a quality hometown brew doing so well across our area and, so when I heard that they were closing, I felt a genuine sadness. I love their beer and had hoped their brews would be a permanent local staple well into the future. I am very relieved to hear that they will be staying open.&#8221;</p><p>Maxwell said his favorite of the brewery&#8217;s beers is the Shaving Cream Ale, &#8220;smooth, creamy and flavorful with a nice aftertaste.&#8221;</p><p>Alicia Kanton, of Jermyn, said, for her, the beer sampler is the best part of the business.</p><p>&#8220;I like 3 Guys and a Beer&#8217;d because they often brew new and different types of beer, so that you can try different types of beers and you don&#8217;t get bored with the same old stuff,&#8221; she said.</p><p>According to Waering, although the food menu at the taproom was downsized, the brewery will continue to maintain this reputation for variety with its beers.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re still going to play around with experimental stuff and have fun,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what people come up to try &#8212; it&#8217;s the new beers, the stuff that they can&#8217;t get anywhere else, so we&#8217;ve got to keep that going.&#8221;</p><p>He stressed the business is in the early stages of re-grouping and some plans for keeping the doors open are still in the making. Eventually, the owner hope to build up their distribution again, but for now, they are keeping it to a minimum.</p><p>The taproom, located at 49 N. Church St., is open from 4:30 to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 3:30 to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday through Tuesday.</p><style>
