Stranded motorists dug out of snow on Pa. Turnpike

Some delight to see first snowstorm of season in Northeastern Pa.

<p>WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; Flowers, green trees and patio designs helped chase away the winter blues for many visitors to the Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday.</p><p>Despite Winter Storm Jonas dumping several inches of snow on the area, the 15th annual Northeastern Pennsylvania Home &amp; Garden Show was open with 112 vendors, including landscapers, USA Insulation, and special guests celebrity chef Todd Wilbur and Harry Rinker from &#8220;The Collector Inspector.&#8221;</p><p>The show will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $7.50 for adults and $5.50 for seniors. Children 16 and under are admitted for free. Military personnel with proper identification also are admitted free.</p><p>The snowstorm did not even ruffle the feathers of Owen, an eastern screech owl, or Chief, an American kestrel, both with the Endless Mountain Nature Center of Tunkhannock.</p><p>Rebecca Lesko, director and naturalist at the center, said the center&#8217;s stand was set up at 11 a.m. Saturday and she was talking non-stop with visitors.</p><p>&#8220;Many people are excited to see the birds,&#8221; Lesko said. &#8220;They are often surprised to see how small the screech owl is.&#8221;</p><p>Lesko and her staff will be back from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.</p><p>Diane Hershey and Ellen Worthington, with Forest Sculptures and Guardian Scapes Inc. in Bloomsburg, said they had a &#8220;hair-raising ride in&#8221; Saturday morning, but it was worth the trip.</p><p>&#8220;The people we are talking to are serious (shoppers),&#8221; Worthington said. &#8220;They know what they want.&#8221;</p><p>Don Smith of Scranton said the winter weather was not keeping him away.</p><p>&#8220;I love coming to these type of events,&#8221; Smith said.</p><p>He watched George Whibley, of A &amp; B Sunrooms and Remodel, demonstrate a new product called solar adjustable patio cover that allows homeowners to open and close louvers to control how much sunlight a patio receives.</p><p>Appraiser Harry Rinker from HGTV&#8217;s series &#8220;The Collector Inspector,&#8221; was thrilled to be back in Wilkes-Barre.</p><p>&#8220;This is my 11th or 12th year here,&#8221; Rinker said. &#8220;I always see such great stuff here.&#8221;</p><p>Some items he saw on Friday consisted of a 1940-era, cast-iron bobsled toy and a pharmacy book listing all medications distributed from 1880 to 1885.</p><p>&#8220;It was fun to see it,&#8221; Rinker said.</p><p>On Saturday Bonnie Emerson of Great Bend brought in an iron-dog door-stopper and a garden gnome.</p><p>Rinker estimated both pieces were made in the 1930s or early 1940s and noted the tight casting. The value of both pieces ranged from $85 to $100.</p><style>

NEPA Home & Garden Show goes on despite snow
