SELINSGROVE, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's Susquehanna University has narrowed its mascot search to two birds and a big cat. The finalists are "Bobcats, "Phoenix" and "River Hawks." The university received over 1,800 suggestions for a new nickname after it chose to drop the "Crusader" mascot last year. Alumni, students, faculty and parents ranked the selections. Critics felt the mascot evoked the Crusades of the Middle Ages and was at odds with the university's increasing diversity and its commitment to embracing and respecting differences. University spokeswoman Angela Burrows tells Pennlive.com (http://bit.ly/1lRTdHb) the school's board of trustees will present their choice at the end of February and students and staff will have a chance to vote on it. The new nickname will be announced in March.
