(AP) — The Latest on three inmates who were recaptured after escaping from a California jail (all times local): 9 a.m. A newspaper says a homeless man in San Francisco who reported sighting a stolen van being used by two jail fugitives could end up collecting $140,000 in reward money. Matthew Hay-Chapman told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://sfchron.cl/1SEK8i3) that he often sleeps in a park but still follows current events and knew the fugitives might be nearby when he spotted the white van. He alerted police and a short time later Hossein Nayeri and Jonathan Tieu were in custody. Another inmate, Bac Duong, had turned himself in a day earlier at an auto shop near the Orange County jail where the escape occurred on Jan. 22. The 55-year-old Hay-Chapman told the Chronicle that he hopes to use the reward money to rebuild his life and help his troubled son, disabled daughter and two young grandchildren who are in foster care in Oregon. ___ 7 a.m. A taxi driver held hostage by three escaped inmates says the fugitives laughed gleefully as they watched TV reports about the search from the Northern California motel room where they were holed up. Long Hoang Ma tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1S0hwkx) he was befriended by inmate Bac Duong, who served as his protector as the escapees argued over whether to kill the cab driver. Ma was held captive for a week, driving with the inmates across the state and sleeping beside them in tiny hotel rooms. He says Duong cried, worried that fellow fugitive Hossein Nayeri would become violent, and talked about wanting to surrender. When Duong decided to leave the others, Ma says the escapee allowed him to sit beside him with his hands unbound during the ride back to Orange County.
