Lions wrap up stressful recruiting season

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; Woodrow Wilson was president and World War I raged in Europe when Jane Davies was born on Feb. 3, 1916.</p><p>Davies, who immigrated from Pembroke, Wales, at 4 years old, was a longtime resident of Wyoming Borough where she has many friends and is known as a good neighbor and a respected member of the community.</p><p>On Wednesday, friends and family members gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday at Kingston Manor Personal Care Center, where she has resided since August.</p><p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know how to thank you all. This is a surprise,&#8221; said Davies, amid a birthday cake and balloons.</p><p>Davies, who graduated from Wyoming Memorial High School, went on to work for UGI Electric for about 35 years.</p><p>Nephew Charles Burns said his aunt is much loved by family members and an integral part of the community.</p><p>&#8220;She drove until she was 92 years old,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Until a few years ago, she was lifting weights at the YMCA.&#8221;</p><p>Wyoming Mayor Bob Boyer, noting that Davies had been &#8220;a cherished resident of Wyoming Borough for nearly 85 years,&#8221; proclaimed Wednesday as Jane Davies Day.</p><p>Boyer said he considered it an honor to participate in such a special day.</p><p>He noted Davies&#8217; commitment to the community and many friendships built throughout her lifetime.</p><p>Davies has been a longtime member of Wyoming Presbyterian Church, where she taught in the nursery and assisted with a multitude of events, including bake sales and the preparation of church dinners.</p><p>A table filled with church friends enthusiastically attended the event, each with a story to tell, a special memory to share. All said that Davies&#8217; life has been filled with kindness and grace.</p><p>Mary Williams, of Wyoming, said the church used Davies&#8217; recipe for Welsh cookies, which came directly from Wales.</p><p>Marilyn Ross, of West Wyoming, said Davies was her Sunday school teacher many years ago and a wonderful role model.</p><p>&#8220;She volunteered at the West Side Food Pantry,&#8221; said Ross. &#8220;And that&#8217;s how I got started.&#8221;</p><p>Davies had an adventurous side and enjoyed traveling to Nova Scotia, Canada, the state of Wyoming and back to Wales with family members.</p><p>She also enjoyed walking year-round, often making her way from her home near the Wyoming Monument to Eighth Street and back.</p><p>As Davies looks back, she also looks forward, forward to days spent with old and new friends, to time with family, to quiet days at the center she now calls home.</p><p>Looking back at her life in Wyoming and now in Kingston, she smiled and said, &#8220;I like both places.
