Man held on charges he overdosed on heroin in maternity ward

RIDGWAY, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man is seeking a new trial in the shooting his girlfriend outside the powdered metals plant where both worked. Forty-six-year-old Michael Stephanic Jr., of St. Marys, was sentenced to life in prison for the shooting that killed 48-year-old June Talmadge. Stephanic didn't contest the allegations, but claimed he didn't remember the shooting. The Bradford Era (http://bit.ly/1SZVZbK ) says Stephanic claims the Elk County trial judge wrongly denied him county paid defense experts about his psychological state and level of intoxication when he killed Talmadge. That happened Sept. 3, 2013 about 2:45 a.m. just outside the entrance at Eastern Sintered Alloys. The plant is also in St. Marys, about 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Stephanic's attorney had argued for less than a first-degree murder conviction given his mental state during the killing.
