Lake-Lehman wins first District 2 Duals wrestling title since 2004

<p>YATESVILLE &#8212; Teammates lifted David Gavek on top of their shoulders as Hershey kisses rained upon the Tunkhannock 106-pounder.</p><p>The sophomore was all smiles, soaking in probably the greatest moment of his scholastic sports career.</p><p>Gavek hit a switch in the third period for the reversal, and clung to Scranton&#8217;s Mark Leggin&#8217;s leg for dear life in the final 16 seconds as the sophomore held on for a 3-2 victory. It was the match-clinching win as Tunkhannock captured the District 2 Class 3A Team Dual championship, 31-26, over Scranton Saturday afternoon at Pittston Area.</p><p>The victory vaults Tunkhannock to the Giant Center in Hershey for the PIAA Class 3A Team Championships where it faces off with District 11 champ and nationally-ranked Bethlehem Catholic in the opening round on Thursday at 8 p.m. This marks the first district duals title for the Wyoming County school.</p><p>The Wyoming Valley Conference champ won eight of the 14 weights, including six of the first eight contested bouts &#8211; picking up bonus points in three of them.</p><p>&#8220;Honestly, I was just trying to get one point in that third period to get to overtime, but I guess I got a little better than that,&#8221; Gavek said. &#8220;I knew that I had to hold him down for like a minute, and that&#8217;s tough but I knew I had to do it. I wasn&#8217;t letting that leg go. That was match or nothing right there.&#8221;</p><p>Arguably, the Tigers got their biggest win before any bout was even wrestled.</p><p>Like it has done all season, Tunkhannock won the disc flip to start the championship &#8211; enabling head coach Bob Hegedty to select which bouts he wanted to send his wrestler out first for.</p><p>&#8220;That flip was everything. Going over this match, we kind of knew that we needed that flip or things wouldn&#8217;t go how we wanted,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Right now, I am just pretty numb because you are never sure how close a match is going to play out. I knew that our kids were ready. This will probably sink in once I get home.&#8221;</p><p>Hegedty got some clutch performances along the way.</p><p>Take Dakota Quick for example.</p><p>The 132-pound senior was down 3-0 to Scranton&#8217;s Jacob Burgette in the second period before scoring a takedown with 14 seconds left to trim it to 3-2 entering the third.</p><p>Quick chose down to start the period, and quickly saw an opening. He grabbed Burgette&#8217;s leg, locked in an inside cradle and flipped the Knight to his back. Five seconds later, the official slapped the mat for the fall.</p><p>&#8220;It was tight.&#8221; Quick said. &#8220;Once I had it locked up, I knew he wasn&#8217;t going to get out of it. This was a big match for me. He&#8217;s a good kid, but I was pretty confident.&#8221;</p><p>Tunkhannock got all the close ones.</p><p>Bill Manley gave up a late takedown to Aidan McNally at 152, and held on for a 6-4 victory.</p><p>Dalton Ray hit a five-point move with 11 seconds left to defeat Andrew Burgette in a battle of 170-pounders with a combined three losses.</p><p>&#8220;After weigh-ins, the nerves kicked in,&#8221; Ray said. &#8220;But once it started, it was just another match that I felt I was well prepared for. I just caught him at the end. It was kind of a revenge match for me because he beat me in the district semifinals last year. Getting that big move at the end just solidified it for me.&#8221;</p><p>It didn&#8217;t stop there.</p><p>Josh Flaherty, who missed some time due to an injury, pushed aside a sloppy takedown attempt by Brian McGuigan and got one of his own with two seconds left to win 13-11 at 195.</p><p>And it ended with Gavek, the smallest member of the Tigers&#8217; team, who fended off Leggin&#8217;s attempt for a reversal for at least 15 seconds.</p><p>&#8220;Oh my god, I think I had a death grip on one of my teammate&#8217;s shoulders during that match,&#8221; Ray said. &#8220;It was so intense, but I knew that he (Gavek) could do it and hold on.&#8221;</p><p>Tommy Traver (126), Jake Richards (145) and Bill Manley (152) also picked up wins for the Tigers (14-1).</p><p>&#8220;This is something we talked about all year long,&#8221; Hegedty said. &#8220;We wanted this team, and this senior class with these underclassmen, to have the experience of wrestling in Hershey. It&#8217;s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and a memory these kids can carry with them all their lives. We are so excited to get there and wrestle with the best.&#8221;</p><style>
