PITTSBURGH (AP) — A federal judge has refused to grant a new trial for a Pennsylvania priest who claimed federal prosecutors wrongly withheld evidence in his sexual tourism case. The 70-year-old priest, Joseph Maurizio, was convicted in September on charges he had sex with poor street children during missionary trips to Honduras. A federal judge in Johnstown rejected defense claims that a statement by one alleged victim might have led to a different verdict. That boy at one point told investigators he wasn't "abused," but prosecutors say the boy was referring to having the priest perform a specific sex act on him, and that he later clarified the priest fondled him. But the priest's lawyer says he could have used the boy's statement to create doubt among jurors. The priest will now be sentenced March 2.
